Essay
Each student will write two 5 page essays on two assigned questions. You should address the question in a well-argued, philosophical essay with basic Introduction-Body-Conclusion structure. You should utilize the assigned readings as sources in formulating your answer. Outside research is encouraged but not required. Any outside research should include proper academic sources such as books by scholars in relevant fields and peer-reviewed journals. Avoid general knowledge sources like Wikipedia, ProCon.org, About.com and possibly biased sources such as advocacy group websites. You should include proper citations and a list of references for your sources according to APA style.
These essays will be graded on
strength and clarity of argument
appropriate and accurate use of philosophical and theoretical concepts
proper citation and reference format
quality of writing:
clarity
essay, paragraph, and sentence structure
grammar
punctuation
Essay #1: Why I Believe/Dont Believe in God
Write an essay arguing either that belief in God is philosophically justified or it is not. Clearly, the readings from Chapter II Section A will be relevant in addressing this question. But also the reading from the other sections of Chapter II can be useful in analyzing this question and constructing an answer. In addition, readings from other sections of the text (particularly on logic, on epistemology, and on ethics) may be relevant. So dont confine your thinking to one section of one chapter.
