In his book, Fairlie discusses these sins (or inclinations to sin) in the context of contemporary society (the book was written in 1978, but the writing is powerful, and most concerns remain true in 2014). Keep in mind that deadly sins are sins, not mainly in the sense of action, but mainly in the sense of alienation (from other people, God, and oneself) and enslavement (power of the sin over the sinner).
