Introduction
This coursework is intended to provide you with an opportunity to undertake a more open-ended approach to engineering design, working as part of a small team. It will require you to interpret and respond to a design brief. The task has been chosen to integrate elements from other modules that you are studying in order to illustrate how Engineering Design is often where professional engineers apply their knowledge and skills. It will also introduce you to the common scenario where some elements of a problem are uncertain, and where engineering judgements must be made.
It is to be carried out in small groups, the selection process for the groups will be explained during the lecture sessions. The objective of this assessment is to generate a candidate solution which will meet the design brief provided, demonstrate the use of objective measures to select a final design and finally present that design in an appropriate format. Engineering analysis which supports your design choices will to be applied.
It is recommended that members of each group are assigned a specific role to oversee the development of particular elements of the machine tool, suggested subsystems could include power source, drivetrain and drill body/structure.

Coursework Specification
The design of a single axis machine tool.
Your team will design a pillar drill, which conforms to all current safety regulations and which is intended to be used primarily by the DIY/home enthusiast.
The drill should be capable of accommodating drill bits from 1mm to 13mm with a maximum drilling depth in Mild Steel of 25mm .
The drill should be powered from a standard single phase 13 Amp 240v AC mains supply.
The number of different drilling speeds should be determined by considering the range of drill sizes which must be accommodated.
Deliverables
Your final submission should consist of the following items:-
Design Report (A4 – Maximum 20 Pages excluding appendices. [60%]
The report should follow a logical structure and will include the following:
• The identification of the key components of a pillar drill.
• A specification based on the design brief.
• The identification of the responsibilities of each group member, i.e. which components each person works on.
• A detailed analysis of the drive system, to include gear ratios, bearing selection and the selection of an appropriate electric motor.
• The use of all bearings must be justified and sourced from the SKF catalogue.
• An analysis of the drill structure to include the maximum stress, the deflection and the stability of the drill when in use.
• A clear, concise, technical explanation regarding how the required mass properties are determined.
Drawings and BOM (A3 – number of pages as required) [40%]:
• A set of high quality manufacturing drawings for non-standard components.
o Have appropriate drawing conventions complying with British Standards been applied?
• Assembly drawing/s for the complete design to include both exploded and unexploded views.
• Bill of Materials (BoM) including all standard and non-standard components and their quantities.
