Literature review (395 pts): Spring 2016
Each student will independently write an APA-style literature review (including title page, abstract, and reference section as well as appropriate headings in the body of the paper). The body of this paper—not including the reference section—must be between 10 and 14 full pages in length. The paper should be based on six peer reviewed empirical research reports from the scholarly literature in psychology. Under no circumstance may you use Wikipedia, or anything like it, or articles from the popular media (New York Times etc) as cited sources in this paper. The sources must have been published after 1998 (unless you are doing an historical account of theory development)
Topic: The topic may be in any area of psychology except physiology (unless student has at least a minor in biology). Topic must address the relationship between at least two specific variables including identifying any important moderators. (the relationship can be causal but it is not required). No two students may do the same topic. Topics may be changed, with my approval, until Wednesday, March 30th
To help ensure that you give adequate time and attention to this task, you will be required to turn in:
1) A brief description of the topic of your paper including the start of a bibliography (20pts) 10 AM Thursday, Feb, 4th
2) An annotated APA Reference Section with 10 sources targeting your topic (75pts) 10AM, Thursday, March 17th
3) Fist submission of the entire final paper (100pts) 10AM, Tuesday April 12th
4) Revised final paper (200pts) 10AM, Thursday, May 5th
This paper must conform to APA writing guidelines. You have learned about these guidelines in at least two other psychology classes. If you are unsure about these guidelines you should consult your lab reports from methods, read the many online APA style tutorials (I highly recommend the Purdue OWL website), or come see me during office hours.
You must read the Baumiester & Leary (1997) article on writing literature reviews and follow their guidelines.
The introduction should present:
– An introduction to the topic and demonstrate its importance.
– A clear statement of purpose. The purpose should be one of those identified in Baumiester & Leary, 1997)
– An explanation of important concepts and variables to be addressed throughout the paper including the targeted variables and any important moderators.
The literature Review Section:
-Should adequately and consistently summarize cited sources (E.G., type of research, purpose, relevant variables, materials used, procedure overview, sample studied, relevant results & conclusions, limitations)
– Should contain a running narrative that provides an overarching conceptualization, perspective, theme or point of view demonstrating how the various sources fit together into the overarching theme or perspective.
The discussion section should:
-Evaluate the quality and strength of the evidence by analyzing and evaluating: (1) the consistency of findings, (2) methodological diversity in the research used, (3) generalizability of results, along with any other important issues. Keep in mind that the discussion section is much different than a restatement of information described in the lit review section
The conclusion section should:
-Draw appropriate conclusions about the relationship examined in the review based on the quality and strength of the presented evidence.
In general:
-It should effectively distinguish between empirical evidence, assertions from authors & your assertions.
-Writing should be clear, concise, accurate, well organized and free from grammatical errors.
