Topic: Final report

Summary: Your final project — your report — is based on your proposal. Because of this, and because this course is required for future teachers, engineers, scientists, and others, each of your reports will be unique. While the specific formats and subjects may vary, all successful projects must be complete, coherent, accurate, well organized, relatively error free, and well formatted.

The length of the BODY of the report should be 8 to 12 pages single spaced. This is a suggested number of pages; fewer pages is not acceptable, but if your work is longer, that is fine. [Note: Front matter is not included in the length requirement for the body of the report. Back matter is no included in the length request unless: 1. It is substantial work, such as lengthy appendix, and 2. You created it.]

Your final project must contain the following:

Letter of Transmittal (this is not the same letter you wrote for your proposal, though the basic format is the same). Do not include it in your Table of Contents.

Front matter:
1.Title page
2.Abstract (on separate page, single spaced). Each term I get last minute emails from students asking what an abstract is. It\’s a kind of summary, but examples are easy to find online, or in journals.
3.Table of Contents with page numbers
4.List of illustrations or figures.

Body: The report proper. This should reflect the book\’s suggestions for formatting and style, and should include graphics that add substance to the paper and don\’t just add space.

Back Matter:
1.Glossary (if needed)
2.Appendix (if needed)

Work Cited Page (MLA format) Do not put it in an appendix.

Most of the above sections of the report are discussed and explained in the book; refer to it for how to do each of these, but email me with any questions you may have.

Your final report should have the appearance of a professional document; part of the grade will be assessed on its appearance. Also, all information that comes from a source, whether is summarized, paraphrased, or quoted, must be cited within the text using MLA citations. There is a link on Blackboard to the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) that shows you how to do that. The book also contains a section on MLA formatting.

Length: The letter of transmittal is one to two pages, the body of the report is eight to twelve pages, and the front and back matter vary but usually add about another six to eight pages.

Format: Again, follow the format discussed in the book for formal reports, and use the example in the book and the one available through the Assignments page as guides. The front and back matter each have their own format, which is also explained in the book. The body of the report should be single-spaced, with one-inch margins. As noted earlier in the term, page lengths are based on Times New Roman 12 point font or on 11 point font for any other font you choose (most fonts are naturally bigger than Times New Roman and are simply too big in 12 point font).
