1. What accounts for the leadership position that ZARA occupies in the industry?
Some key notes I personally made which can be expanded on (if relevant)
Zara is the leader of fast fashion industry, but is in struggle for industry leadership with H&M
because:
H&M: second biggest number of sales, boost sales by having famous designer collaborations

1. vertical integration (new collections and design anytime, weekly basis, build on customer expectation, inhouse production)
2. super fast turn around (new design every two weeks, short lead-time)
3. listen carefully to customer needs and wants
4. online shopping
5. variety of clothes (diversity of clothes)
6. focus on product design and quality instead of advertisement
7. policy pricing (taking in account of costs)
8. lower quantities, more styles
9. information technology (implementation for platform to anaylse different target segment and their demand)
10. very broad target market, not segmenting as traditionally, (all shape, style, age),..

Topic: Social Behavior

We frequently speak about health disparities as they relate to race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (broadly defined). However, disparities can occur with respect to many other factors. One of the group presentations mentioned some of these factors that receive less attention (e.g. rural v. urban populations). For your extra credit discussion question, please select a health topic where you have noticed or believe health disparities exist, OUTSIDE of the areas of race/ethnicity, income, education, and gender. Describe the nature of this disparity, and try to use an ecological model approach to explain the causes of this disparity. Remember that you should go beyond just describing the causes of the disease itself, and also describe the cause of the disparity between the groups you have identified.

Part A. The shoe department buyer at Feets has determined that Feets should buy 98,000 pairs of athletic shoes from their vendor, Adidke. The shoes are shipped and packed 10 pairs to a shipping box. Each shipping box has a value of $517. The buyer estimates that about $59 is spent on the ordering and sourcing decisions per shipping box. The annual percentage holding cost is 35%. Does that forecast pass the reasonability test? Include with your answer:

What is the optimal number of boxes to order each time an order is placed?
What is the total annual ordering cost?

Part B. The shoe department buyer at Feets must now choose between shipping vendors from the port of entry (Oakland, CA) to the warehouse in Sacramento, CA. There are two viable alternatives from two different vendors: 2-day freight and 5-day flat rate freight. The rates for 2-day freight are $13.562 per shipping box; and for 5-day freight, there is a flat $1,500 per order for any size order up to 123 boxes. The annual percentage holding cost is 35%.

Which alternative would you recommend, and why?
What is the total annual shipping cost?

Topic: Contract law

Film Fun plc is a one woman company operated by Fiona, which distributes films. Fiona wanted Film Fun plc to be able to distribute a film entitled ‘The Bluest Blood’. She visited Goliath plc, to see if Film Fun plc could hire the film from them. On the wall of the offices of Goliath plc is a sign in blue print, on a yellow background stating:
‘Goliath plc is not liable for any loss, however caused, to any of its customers beyond the hire charge of the film hired by the customer’.
‘Customers, who wish to contract on different terms, should discuss this with Goliath plc’.
Fiona has a very unusual form of colour blindness which would have made it impossible for her to read the sign.
Fiona contracted for Film Fun plc, with Goliath plc, for the hire of the film, ‘The Bluest Blood’, and Film Fun plc paid Goliath’s hire charge. Through the negligence of Goliath plc, there was a major delay in Film Fun plc receiving the film.
Due to the delay Film Fun plc has suffered entirely, and readily, foreseeable losses far in excess of the hire charge for the film. However, Film Fun plc would have suffered losses less than the hire charge if it had taken up an offer to hire ‘The Bluest Blood’ from Harry’s Films plc, but it did not do so, for fear of its reputation being damaged as the copies of films supplied by Harry’s Films plc are often of poor quality, with the viewing and sound quality deteriorating during use.
In the past, where it has been negligent, Goliath plc has sometimes settled claims with other customers for sums in excess of the hire charge. Goliath plc’s business is not doing as well now, and in relation to Film Fun plc, it is insisting that its liability is limited to the hire charge.
Advise Film Fun plc.
