Although we never explicitly explored the topic in our class discussions, it is clear that motivation plays a large role in Kant’s moral theory. For example, one’s motives play a key role in treating someone as an end in themselves. Explore this through reading the relevant resource (Stratton- Lake) and write an essay answering the following: (a.) Define precisely what it is to act from duty and to act from inclination. (b.) According to Kant, how do these notions relate to the moral worth of an act. (c.) What argument does Kant give for this (especially: Why does Kant think motives of inclination lack moral worth?). (d.) Consider and evaluate objections to this thesis.
