Introduction:
Write an Introduction paragraph about the article. The length of an introduction is usually one paragraph for a topic review. Include a few opening sentences that announce the author(s) and the title, and briefly explain the topic of the text. Present the aim of the text and summaries the main finding or key argument. Conclude the introduction with a brief statement of your evaluation of the text. This can be a positive or negative evaluation or, as is usually the case, a mixed response and writers. Then Summary paragraph about the article.

Describe the author’s intention, the main question/topic, the structure of the paper, the arguments/evidence, conclusions and further questions raised but unresolved in the text. In an essay of 2,000 words, discuss the blurring of boundaries between fact and fiction in Sebald’s The Emigrants.

Guidance notes

You will need to reread all of Dennis Walder’s discussion of The Emigrants in Book 3, Chapter 8. His section on ‘The Emigrants and genre’ (p. 277) is particularly important but there are useful comments to be found in the introduction too. The sections of Walder’s chapter that follow focus on each of the four narratives that make up the text, so again those discussions will help you to formulate your arguments.

Your main source, of course, is The Emigrants itself. It is essential that you support your argument with evidence from the text in the form of brief quotations which you analyse and interpret. You should spend time selecting and evaluating your examples carefully. Amongst other things the – apparently – documentary evidence which illustrates Sebald’s text should provide a rich source of discussion; try to choose examples which Walder has not discussed; in that way you would demonstrate that you have understood his teaching points and can follow through by extending them. Narrators and narrative perspectives will be important, as will the idea of memory. The Introduction and the Conclusion to Part 2 of Book 3 (pp. 167 and 303) should help you to formulate your ideas and start you off.

For this task you are to imagine that NSW PCYC\’S and Youth Action (the peak organisation representing young people and youth services in NSW) are holding a poster competition.
