Topic: P\’kolino Case Study

Read the P\’kolino case study, pages 261-304 in the your text. It is an example of an extremely well written business plan, in the traditional style of the late second millennium. (Note: the financial exhibits are not missing, but are in a follow-on case for a module later in the class). P\’kolino is a children\’s furniture company, launched in 2005. The company is still very much in business and the website can be visited at https://www.pkolino.com/

Write a paper that answers to the following questions:

Does the business plan tell a coherent and compelling story?
Does the plan capture all of the learning that Antonio and JB have accumulated?
What three questions do you think Antonio and JB need to answer through further planning before they launch the venture?
What are the three strongest aspects of the plan?
What areas need improvement?

The five specific questions should be annotated and have specific answers.

All papers should be written in the third person (he, he, it, and they). Make every effort not to shift to second person (you, your) as in, “When starting a company you need money.” Try to avoid shifting to the first person (I, we) as well. It is distracting to the reader and bad style to shift persons in a paper—students often do it in the middle of a sentence.

1. Leadership Decision Making

Leaders are often faced with decisions in their roles. Some of these decisions are complex and require a leader to consult other people and resources. These decisions are often referred to as nonprogrammed decisions. Other decisions are less complicated and are made based on immediate issues a leader must address; these are often referred to as routine or programmed decisions.

When a leader is faced with a more complex decision, he or she can choose from among several different styles a leader uses to arrive at a decision. One decision-making style is referred to as a directive style. In a directive style, the emphasis is on a simple and clear solution. An analytical style is used when a leader is considering a complex situation and has ambiguous information. These leaders will carefully analyze their decisions by gathering as much information as possible in order to solve a problem. Their goal is to arrive at the best possible answer. A leader using the conceptual style will consider a broad range of alternatives in an attempt to solve the problem. These leaders typically enjoy creating new ideas. Finally, a behavioral style is based on having a deep concern about the organization. Leaders using this style are supportive of others and want to help them meet their goals. They are open to suggestions from others when they make decisions.

The following illustration provides another look at decision-making styles:

Leading Teams

In the field of organizational leadership, you will frequently be involved in either leading a team or making a decision to form a team. Although there are many types of teams that can exist within organizations, teams are typically tasked with achieving specific goals and objectives of an organization. Teams can also be composed of managers and subordinates, or can be groups of employees with different areas of expertise. Teams can also be formed for a specific project. Regardless of the reason a team exists, managers and leaders must learn about how teams are developed in order to effectively manage them.

Teams develop in stages that can occur rapidly. Click each tab to reveal more details. These are details below.

Forming – The forming stage of team development occurs when people get to know one another and develop an understanding of the goals of the team.

Storming – The storming stage occurs when there are conflicts and disagreements between the individuals on the team. This is typically due to personality issues and/or disagreements over the perceptions of team goals and objectives.

Norming – During the norming stage, conflicts are resolved and the team begins to work together.

Performing – The performing stage occurs when the team begins working on the tasks assigned and begins to achieve its goals and objectives.

Adjourning – Finally, the adjourning stage occurs in teams where goals have been fulfilled and the team no longer needs to work together.

A leader plays a specific role on a team. He or she should guide the teams through the team development stage, but the leader also must ensure the goals and objectives of the team are met. The leaders’ role starts with clearly understanding the goal or objective the team must achieve. The leader must then select the team members necessary to achieve these objectives. The choice of who will serve on the team is important. Leaders should look for a diverse group of individuals to serve on a team that requires creativity and innovation, or leaders may look for specific talents or abilities. Once the team is chosen, the leader can guide the team through the process above.
