1102 Hunger Games Paper Your assignment is to compare and contrast the book and movie of The Hunger Games in an academic paper of approximately 500 words (about two double-spaced typed pages.) A comparison and contrast paper can be structured in one of two ways: 1. You identify all the similarities between the two and then identify all the ways they are different. 2. You identify several different criteria for your comparison/contrast, and then for each of those criteria you show the ways in which they are similar or different. For example, you might believe that the plot, characterization and theme are very similar in both books, while the differences are confined to small items such as individual scenes or characters. Using strategy one, you’d construct a thesis statement that indicates that point, then have two main “chunks” to your paper – chunk one provides specific evidence to support your similarities, and chunk two provides specific evidence to support the differences. If you choose strategy two, you would state in your introduction that there are elements of character, plot, and theme that are both similar and different. Then you would write one “chunk” about how the characters in the book resemble or differ from those in the movie. Repeat the process for the next two chunks. A reference to something from the Introduction often provides this sense of closure, giving a sense of things coming full circle. • A conclusion can also provide a “discovery” for the reader by making explicit some idea that has been implicit throughout the essay. This discovery should never be a completely new idea, for ending with a new topic prevents the sense of closure and makes the essay seem incomplete. • For every Introduction strategy, there is a corresponding Conclusion strategy. For instance, if you begin with a quotation, your Conclusion might refer back to that quotation, or might include another quotation by the same writer. • If you began with a paradox, your Conclusion might refer back to that paradox. Your second major assignment is an essay responding to any one (or two) of the short stories we discussed in this Unit. You may also choose to compare/contrast two stories that have been paired together under the same sub-heading. The focus in either choice must be narrow and specific, which you slowly uncover in the body of your essay. (Choosing a wide or general theme is not a good idea, because it forces you to state the obvious.) Your paper must have a clear thesis stated early, evidence and reasoning to support it throughout the body of the essay, and an analysis of the significance of this reading to an understanding of the story. Evidence must include quotes and paraphrasing from the story with page numbers noted in MLA style. Include a Works Cited page, listing your secondary and primary source, the story, in MLA style. Method: Your essay is an analysis of the story that explores a unique point of view. You are arguing about a specific idea that the reader may not have thought of and urging the reader to understand and agree with you. This is why, focusing on a smaller topic will be helpful. For example, a poor thesis will state: “’The Story of an Hour’ is about a wife who rejoices her husband’s death.” As opposed to a good thesis that will state: “’The Story of an Hour’ is a psychological journey into the mind of a woman burdened by patriarchy and her ultimate and tragic demise with the realization that she will have to live within its traditions.” For more information, use the handout for “How to Write a Thesis.” A good analysis concentrates on details: you should quote portions of the story to show how the text supports your thesis. Then you should offer comments and analysis that show how the portion you’re interpreting contributes to the work as a whole. As a general rule, “say more about less”: limit your focus to a small enough topic so that you can cover it in detail in this brief paper. Further, we have seen “religion” as something that needed to be classified and categorized (and therefore became known as “world religions”). The creation of these categories can be seen as an attempt to depart from thinking about the world from a European perspective. This idea of world religions, which acknowledges multiple traditions and therefore diversity in the world, relates to the idea of religious pluralism as we know it in America. Religious pluralism is the understanding that multiple, “authentic” religions can exist peacefully in a society — where all voices are allowed to be heard (as Eck would say). Or are they? • For your paper, you will first read Diana Eck’s “What is Pluralism?” and “From Diversity to Pluralism,” which can be found here: http://pluralism.org/pluralism/what_is_pluralism and http://pluralism.org/encounter/challenges.
