Discuss these ideas for the use of color and its impact in our own times, such as its effect for advertising and sales, or its impact in the workplace and home.

Project description
Describe two (2) color paintings by different artists (selected from the list or sources) that you believe represent the following quote by Kandinsky on the subject of color in art. Justify your response. From Concerning the Spiritual in Art: If you let your eye stray over a palette of colors, you experience two things. In the first place you receive a purely physical effect, namely the eye itself is enchanted by the beauty and other qualities of color. These are physical sensations, limited in duration. They are superficial, too, and leave no lasting impression behind if the soul remains closed. And so we come to the second result of looking at colors: their psychological effect. They produce a correspondent spiritual vibration, and it is only as a step towards this spiritual vibration that the physical impression is of importance. … Generally speaking, color directly influences the soul.” Wassily Kandinsky. Discuss these ideas for the use of color and its impact in our own times, such as its effect for advertising and sales, or its impact in the workplace and home.

Question 1 (50 Marks)

Naz recently decided to sell his BMW car and on Monday he placed an advert in the magazine Bruddersfield Car Trader:

2013 BMW 320d for sale. Mint condition. 11,500 or nearest offer. Tel: 2009 007007.

Vicky telephoned Naz and offered him 10,500 for the car, but Naz replied No. But I will accept 11,000. Let me know by Friday. Vicky stated that she would have to think this over since this was more than she wanted to pay. She left her telephone number and address in case Naz wanted to contact her. On Wednesday, Vicky telephoned Naz and left a message on his answering machine as follows:

I will pay the 11,000 asked by you.

Unfortunately on Wednesday Nazs sister accidentally erased the message on the answering machine. On Thursday, Naz wrote to Vicky stating that as he had not heard from her he had sold the car to someone else.

Advise Vicky whether or not she has a valid contract with Naz, using cases to illustrate your answer.

Question 2 (25 Marks)
Explain the test for determining the status of an employee.

Question 3 (25 Marks)
By reference to cases explain how the common law incorporates an exclusion clause into a contract.

Essay #1: Why I Believe/Dont Believe in God
Write an essay arguing either that belief in God is philosophically justified or it is not. Clearly, the readings from Chapter II Section A will be relevant in addressing this question. But also the reading from the other sections of Chapter II can be useful in analyzing this question and constructing an answer. In addition, readings from other sections of the text (particularly on logic, on epistemology, and on ethics) may be relevant. So dont confine your thinking to one section of one chapter. Due March 11.

Assessment 2 – Differential equation model

The following Learning Outcome will be addressed in this assignment:
Make connections with real-world electrical/electronic engineering applications that you analysis and model with mathematical concepts

In order to pass the assessment you will need to:
Develop a differential equation model for a case study of an engineering problem
Use mathematical software such as MATLAB to numerically solve the equations in the model and produce a team project report which expresses the problem and solution with mathematical notation
Give an oral presentation to explain both the model and the results

Work with colleagues in a group of 4. The group will produce a word-processed document detailing the work that you have done. The document must include your student IDs. You will be marked only on the work submitted in this document and presented in the presentation. Your individual mark will be influenced by your contribution to the group presentation, your contribution to the group area on BREO, your interim progress report, and the peer assessment forms.

Instructions

A case study for a proposed system is attached. Based on this description, your group must perform the following tasks:

1. Create a mathematical model of the system, including first-order differential equations. An essential aspect of mathematical modelling is to simplify the problem. For this assignment creating a “compartmental model” and using Newton’s Law of Cooling will lead to suitable differential equations.

2. Evaluate the coefficients in the equations based on information provided to the group or found during research by the group.

3. Use a discussion board and file exchange area (which will be supplied for your group on BREO) to share information from your research and modelling.

4. Use MATLAB or other mathematical software to numerically solve the equations.

5. Test the model with relevant coefficient values.

6. Suggest some values which would improve the behaviour of the system.

7. Create a word-processed report including details of the model that the group has developed and of the testing of the model.

8. Give a 5-minute presentation about the project.

During the weekly practical sessions, each group should show the progress that they are making to allow early feedback to be given.

Note that the ideas in Lectures 9 and 10 and Practical Exercise 10 of the unit are relevant to this assignment.

Indicative project plan:

Week 11 Get to know what is in this assignment, and read the case study
Week 12 Allocate research tasks to members of the group
Week 13 Create a model with named variables and a diagram
Week 14 Create the differential equations for the model, using the data that will be supplied to each group
Week 15 Use MATLAB to solve the equations
Week 16 Test the model with different component values
Week 17 Finalise the report and prepare for the presentation

Deliverables

The following items are deliverable as a result of the tasks described in the instructions:

From each Group:

Each group should submit the word-processed report described above, including:

1) The mathematical model of the system, including differential equations using appropriate mathematical notation.

2) Graph(s) showing the existing behaviour.

3) Graphs showing the predicted behaviour for relevant values of the coefficients in the equations.

4) An explanation of the model and of the results.

5) A recommendation for solving the problem.

6) The MATLAB or other commands used (in an appendix to the report).

7) References for information that was discovered during research and that was used in the model.

See the “Study Hub” on BREO for advice on Assignments, Writing and Referencing.

Delivery method:
Submit to Turnitin through BREO (Assessment / Group assignment).

From each Individual:

1) A 100-word interim progress report describing the progress that your group has made, and what your contribution is. To be submitted by the end of week 13 (22nd January 2016).

2) Evidence of using the group area on BREO. Submitting discussion board comments or using the file exchange area will automatically create this evidence – there is no need to provide any further proof.

3) A peer assessment form reporting on your interaction with other members of the group.

Delivery method for parts 1 and 3:
Submit to BREO (Assessment / Group assignment).

Presentation:
Each group will present their work in the practical class in Week 18 (week commencing 22nd February 2016)

Patient monitoring system
Medical Monitoring Ltd is a company which makes monitoring systems for patients in hospitals. Each system is based on a standard CPU processor chip.

The system works fine when they test it on a laboratory bench. The air temperature in the laboratory is about 20 °C. When they turn the system on, they find that the processor warms up and that after a while it reaches a steady temperature of about 45 °C. Note that the system includes a metal heat sink, which is attached to the processor and which helps the heat to disperse into the air, and that 45 °C is within the operating range of the processor.

But when the system is delivered, it is installed in plastic case. The air inside the case heats up, the heat cannot escape, so the processor overheats, gets damaged and stops working.

The company design department is considering various ways of solving the problem. One suggestion is to fit a small fan to blow air at room temperature into the case (and to make holes in the case to let the hot air out). The sales team complain that this will make some noise, which should be avoided in a hospital environment. The CPU includes a temperature sensor, so the designers are thinking of turning the fan on or off if the processor temperature reaches particular values, so that it does not run all the time.

Your task is to model the system to better understand what is happening and what can be done about it. You need to model (a) the laboratory setup, (b) the existing setup in the plastic case, and (c) the proposed setup with a fan. You will need some additional information: some of this you can find by research (including in data sheets for components), other information (such as the type of processor and the size of case) will be supplied to your group during the assignment. To explain your recommendation, you need to produce a report and give a presentation to the management of the company.
Assessment

Mark range 0 – 39 40 – 59 60 – 100
Areas Fail Illustrative mark 38 Pass Illustrative mark 55 Good pass Illustrative grade 72
Modelling Some attempt made to model the system, but without using differential equations. Model sufficient to make some progress with addressing the problem, but not all features of the problem are included. Model considers all the relevant details of the case study, and is expressed in a good mathematical form including differential equations.
Testing No evidence that the model has been converted into MATLAB or other commands that can be run to test the model. Model has been converted into MATLAB or other commands, but the results may not be correct. The model has been converted into MATLAB or other commands that correspond to the differential equations.
Report Some parts of the report listed under “Deliverables” are missing. Report includes the parts listed under “Deliverables”, but some are incomplete or of poor quality. An attractive report that explains what the problem is, how it can be addressed, and how the proposed solution will behave.
Presentation Presentation of the problem without the modelling, testing or proposed solution. Presentation that shows the problem and includes the model or the results of the testing, but without showing how they are related. Clear presentation that shows the effect of the proposed change. The presenter understands the problem and how it has been addressed.

Describe the content, the context and the process of HRD issues, and provide whatever evidence is necessary in order to convey a rich picture of the issues you are dealing with to a lay reader.

Project description
(i)Start with an introduction in which you provide a statement of what it is that you are looking at (i.e. draw the boundaries around the topic you are going to focus on and identify the issues you are going to cover in the subsequent sections). Then outline the structure of the essay and provide a summary of the themes to follow.
(ii)Offer a literature review of the relevant material on change, focusing in particular on those aspects that are connected with the topic you are discussing. Provide a synthesis and critique of the literature. Dont merely reproduce whatever the textbooks say but try to probe deeper and wider in a reflective manner. The more value you add to the literature via critical synthesis and commentary the higher a mark you will get.
(iii)If you are using personal examples describe your case study as lucidly as you can. Describe the content, the context and the process of HRD issues, and provide whatever evidence is necessary in order to convey a rich picture of the issues you are dealing with to a lay reader. Be descriptive yet concise, analytical but coherent.
(iv)Offer an analysis of the case drawing on the relevant concepts outlined earlier in your literature review. This is perhaps the most crucial and value-adding section of your essay. Use the concepts, models, frameworks and theories you discussed earlier in order to illuminate what you take to be the key and significant aspects of the case material. If, for example, your analysis is based on mere common sense, it means that your literature section was virtually redundant. Ideally, the concepts you earlier discussed should be used in this section to make sense of the case phenomena. Substantiate your claims with appropriate evidence from the case.
(v)Conclude your essay by drawing out the key general lessons derived from your particular case and, if you can, relate these lessons to similar examples published in the literature. Reflective comments on the dynamics of HRD/HRM more generally will also be welcome and will be rewarded appropriately.
(vi)Dont forget to list all the major references used in the essay at the end of it.
(vii)Good English is extremely appreciated! Please pay attention to the structure of your essay, check the logical flow of your arguments, and use concepts from the literature (where appropriate) instead of lay language; get soon to the point without long-winded introductions!
