Have you ever come across a problem and said to yourself, “If it was me, I would have done so and so differently”?  In this week’s assignment, you will have an opportunity to do it your way. When we begin a new endeavor, it is always great to know where we are headed. After all, we don’t just build a house and decide where to locate the rooms once the work is completed. In much the same way, any organization should have a good vision of where they currently are, and where they are going.

For your Final Paper, you will be required to create and explain a proposed logic model. This week, you will begin creating the Assumptions/Issues portion of the model. For those without a particular field, you may choose a field that most closely aligns to your future educational career.

For this assignment, you are to place yourself in the role of a workplace educator who is proposing a program evaluation to the leadership team of your organization to implement some innovative way to accomplish a task or fix a problem. You are to choose a topic related to your educational field that can be used in the remaining weeks as well as the final paper (refer to final paper guidelines to get a better idea if your topic will be useful). The proposal and logic model is Parent Involvement You will create a clear and organized flowchart using Microsoft Word that shows the steps needed to accomplish the particular task you chose. For example, suppose you work in the registration department at a college. What are the steps needed for a student to enroll for the first time? Please make sure to pick a specific action that needs to be accomplished. You will need to provide a minimum of 10 steps. Refer to the following examples of flowcharts:

Your flowchart should fit on one to two pages (landscape or portrait).  In addition, you are to provide a summary that further details the issue that is being addressed.  Note that you will use this week’s assignment as part of your Final Paper.

Scenario :

 

Dianne is a young woman with a spending problem. She has three credit cards that are maxed out, she is behind in her rent, and her landlord is threatening to evict her. Fortunately, she has been paying her payments on her leased laptop computer, but next month is not looking good. Dianne works as a cashier forWalmart. She has worked there for the past five years and has learned a way to make some extra cash. On occasion, when the time is right, Dianne pockets the cash given by a customer and does not register the transaction.

Today is her birthday, and with the extra cash, Dianne takes a fellow co-worker out for dinner.  At the end of their dinner, Dianne and her co-worker skip out, not leaving funds to cover the bill.  She justifies it to herself, “well, the food and service wasn’t that good anyway”.  Board as ever, she contacts her cousin, who works at the nearby “IMAX” theater.  She wants to see the latest Star Wars movie, but not wanting to spend any money, she gets her cousin to give her two movie stubs and they use them to gain admission.

At the end of the movie, Dianne and her co-worker exit the theater to find that Dianne’s laptop is missing from her car. The night just keeps getting better and better. It must have been stolen. They call the police and the police fill out a report. She drives back to her apartment, and when she arrives, she finds a notice of eviction posted to her door. Getting desperate, she asks her co-worker for a loan of $500. Her co-worker writes out a personal check and says “you better pay me back this time”. Dianne smiles and replies, “of course, you know I’m good for it”. Her co-worker laughs and waves goodbye.

Dianne then takes her co-worker’s check and adds a one in front of the five and fifteen over the word five. She then hands the check to her landlord telling him, “you can’t kick me out man; I’ve got nowhere to go. Here’s the back rent, I’ll get back on track…I promise.” The landlord agrees to let her stay, but threatens to evict her if she’s late again.

Dianne has a restless night’s sleep because she’s worried about the laptop. The following morning she gets a call from Computer Depot, that leases her laptop and they inform her that they have repossessed it because they were informed that she was unreliable for payment. Dianne is infuriated. She gave Computer Depot all her money for down payment, instead of buying groceries that week. That same night, after hours, she goes to Computer Depot and tries to get her laptop back, but unfortunately for her, Computer Depot has hired a security guard to patrol the property. The guard catches her red handed, climbing out a window with the computer, so he calls the police. The 911 dispatch alerts you (the police officer), and, as the officer in the vicinity, you go to Computer Depot and handle the call.

This is the culminating lab assessment in BIOL 103. It is designed to assess your ability to apply the principles of the scientific method.

The Effect of low pH on Enzyme Activity

Design an experiment in which you will test the effect of an acidic fluid on enzymatic activity. Recall: enzymes are proteins! To complete this project, it may be useful for you to first review the Scientific Method Tutorial, the OLI module about pH and enzymes, Lab 1 (Introduction to Science) and Lab 4 (Enzymes).  As you review Lab 4, you will be reminded that there are several factors that impact enzymatic activity: pH, temperature, and amount of reagent. It is OK to use the same enzyme/substrate/method as you did in lab 4 (but modify the treatment), or you can search on-line to find a different enzyme/substrate/method for measuring enzyme activity for your project (include all references).

As you design your experiment for this project, please remember that you are trying to examine how an acidic fluid will modify the outcome of an enzymatic reaction.  To successfully complete this project, you will need to identify the question(s) being asked in your experiment and the hypothesis that you are testing.  In your experimental design, you must clearly explain what you are doing. That means that you will need to identify the enzyme, the substrate, the acidic fluid used as treatment, the control treatment and the method of measuring enzyme activity, as well as explain your experimental protocol.  You must also thoroughly explain how the acidic fluid impacted enzyme activity based on the results from your own experiment as well as knowledge of enzymes and pH from the OLI modules, lab manual and potentially additional information sources.

Hint: Keep in mind that the acid will change the environmental conditions of the experiment (for example, a low pH value could change the shape of the active site on the enzyme protein), without directly participating in the reaction.

Lab Materials

You may need all or some of the following, depending on your experimental design:

Materials from your lab kit:

• pH paper
• hydrogen peroxide solution (you can purchase this at a pharmacy if you have used up the bottle that came with the lab kit)
• plastic beakers or cups
• vinegar
• yeast (can be purchased at grocery store if more is needed)
• balloons
• plastic bottle
• marker for labeling of beakers
• Cell phone/digital camera – pictures required

You may choose to use additional materials (different acidic fluids and/or different organisms and/or different substrate if you chose an enzyme other than catalase).

Outline:

Include the following in your outline:

• Name of enzyme you will use
• Name of organism (if applicable)
• The substrate
• Method for measuring enzyme activity
• Treatment: acidic fluid(s), pH, length of exposure, how you will treat your samples
• The control(s) in the experiment
• Sample size
• Hypothesis
• How you will present your data (table and/or type of graph)
• Anything else you would like to get feedback on before you start your experiment

 

Write a lab report that includes the following:

1. Title page: descriptive title, your name, course name, semester

2. Introduction: general background information about enzymes and specific information about your chosen enzyme, the question(s) that you are asking and a clear hypothesis for your experiment (20 points).

3. Design an experiment. Provide a detailed description of the materials and methods used to conduct the experiment. Identify control and experimental samples, as well as independent and dependent variables. Also include the methods used for data collection and analysis (20 points).

4. Conduct the experiment and record your results. Take picture of results. What did you observe? Present your data in table and/or graph format. Remember to label everything and include the unit of measure with all numbers (20 points)

5. Use your knowledge of enzymes and pH to interpret and discuss your results. It may be necessary for you to refer to the OLI course modules, lab manual and/or use additional information resources. What effect does the acidic treatment have on enzyme activity? Did you get the expected results? Explain. (20 points)

6. State a specific and accurate conclusion. Is your hypothesis supported by the results? Looking back, how could you have improved your experiment? (10 points)

7. Include a list of references to all information sources used in APA format (5 points).
