Bioterrorism
There is a focus largely on natural disasters and the need to have relatively updated management plans in order to effectively respond to natural disasters. Comment on whether or not we can adequately plan for a bioterrorism event, for example, and how often we can and should revise protocols associated with potential bioterrorism? Thoughts are welcome from all.

n this module, we examined crimes against persons, crimes against property, and white-collar crimes. These crimes are all treated differently by the legislature as well as the media. These differences are a reflection of how society views them. As you consider these differences, you should also consider how these differences have evolved over time.

Tasks:

Prepare a 3- to 5-page report that describes all of the following points:

• The differences in the treatment of each type of crime by the legislature. Explore the different crime levels (misdemeanor vs. felony) and different punishments.
• The differences in the descriptions utilized by the media. How does the media depict the different types of criminals? Have there been any changes?
• The differences in the theoretical applications for these types of crimes. How do the theories differentiate between these types of criminal behavior?

Assignment 2: Successful Domestic Company Goes Global!

Imagine that you are the CEO of a successful domestic company. In the last 6 months, many potential clients in foreign countries have expressed a desire to conduct business with you. You know that in order for your company to grow, you will have to expand overseas. You have recently attended a local three (3)-day international trade exposition and have gathered many brochures on the foreign companies interested in doing business with your company.

After meeting with the Executive Committee of your successful domestic company, you decide that you will need to identify a minimum of two (2) countries for expansion and two (2) expatriates whom you will send into the chosen countries. The selected expatriates will learn about the countries’ cultures and business activities there. You must prepare a report for the potential employees who may want to take an overseas assignment, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors.

Use the Internet and Strayer Library to research possible countries for expansion. Next, conduct research on leveraging expatriates over country nationals for business overseas. Finally, research books that could help expatriates in their transition to working overseas.

Note: You may create and / or assume all necessary assumptions needed for the completion of this assignment.

Write an eight to ten (8-10) page paper in which you:

1. Create a guide to leveraging expatriates. The guide should include four to six (4-6) sources that address benefits and challenges of sending expatriates to other countries.
2. Examine the major benefits that this report can provide for the organization, and suggest two (2) uses for the information contained therein. Justify your response.
3. Analyze the major factors (e.g., distance, cultural background, knowledge of the related countries, languages spoken, relatives who may live in another country, etc.) that would influence your choice of countries into which your company would expand. Recommend two (2) countries for expansion. Provide a rationale for your response.
4. Determine three (3) criteria that you would consider when deciding which employees to send abroad. Justify your response.
5. Propose the major methods and / or incentives you would use in order to encourage the selected employees to become expatriates. Provide a rationale for your response.
6. Recommend one (1) strategy to ensure that both the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors are committed to the expansions. Justify your response.
7. Recommend two (2) books that the selected expatriates should take with them when they go overseas. Provide a rationale for your response.
8. Outline a guide for expatriates who will reside within another country for one to two (1-2) years. The related guide should cover the following topics: selecting items to pack, accommodating a vehicle (i.e., leave behind or send overseas), shipping or selling furniture, moving pets, and arranging accommodations for children and / or family residing in another country for the discussed length of time.
9. Develop a framework for your presentation. The framework should include the following:
   1. Relevant visuals
   2. Statistics that support the decision to expand into the identified countries
   3. A feasibility study of your company’s proposed expansion to the countries in question
   4. Information related to renting or buying land or a building
   5. Any other information relevant to the case for expansion

Research Paper: Final Submission

 

Select two historical leaders. One who was known for making a positive contribution in a leadership role, and the other who made a negative contribution in a leadership role (one good leader and one bad leader).

1. Each leader must be, or have been a business or world leader (each leader) from 1960 or later.
2. Provide three separate reasons (with referenced examples) to justify the reason they were a good, or bad leader.
3. Identify, compare, and contrast the two different leadership styles of each one.

Assignment 2: Analyzing Profitability and Other Variables

Cost-volume-profit analysis is an extension of break-even analysis. CVP analysis enables managers to understand cost behavior and the effect on profits in response to a wide variety of influences, such as changes in volume, variable and fixed costs, and price. This helps management make appropriate business decisions. For example, CVP analysis helps management identify a break-even point if volume or costs change or determine the volume necessary for a targeted profit level. CVP analysis can also help management develop a pricing strategy by projecting the effects the different price structures will have on costs and profits.

In this assignment, you will examine how you can use CVP analysis to plan and make various business decisions. In addition, you will analyze financial data of Compnet’s potential product acquisition (Prime Component) and determine the effects on profit due to variations in its costs and sales price.

When faced with a problem, what do you do to solve it? This assignment asks you to apply a six-step to problem solving process to a specific problem scenario. You will write a paper that presents a synthesis of your ideas about solving the problem using this systematic approach. As Voltaire said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.”

Choose one (1) of the problem scenarios as a topic choice for your paper (Note: Your professor must approve your topic choice before you begin work on the assignment.)

Scenario 1: You have worked at your company for eleven (11) years. You have returned to college to earn a Bachelor’s degree in order to increase your chances for a promotion. You are nearly finished with your degree, when a supervisor’s position in a competing company becomes available in another state. The start date is in two (2) weeks, during your final exam period for your courses. The position offers a $15,000 per year salary increase, a car allowance, and relocation expenses. Your former supervisor works for the company and is recommending you for the position based on your outstanding job performance; if you want the job, it’s yours. All of the other supervisors at this level in the company have Master’s degrees, so you know that you would be expected to earn your Bachelor’s degree and continue on to a Master’s degree. Your present company offers tuition reimbursement, but the new company does not.

Scenario 2: Your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a school project. He / she is very excited about the project and begins work immediately, doing research on the Internet and gathering materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child is not including all of the required items in the project, and you have some ideas for how to improve the quality of the presentation. You recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of a child developing responsibility for his/ her own learning. You recall the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects. You, on the other hand, want to encourage your child’s confidence in his / her ability to complete a project independently. The next day, you are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your child’s class. That parent has spent over $30 in supplies for the science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the project together.

Scenario 3: You have two jobs—one during the week from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and one on Saturday from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. You are taking two classes—one that meets from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, and one class online. You have two kids—one who plays soccer, and one who is in band. You have two elderly parents who no longer drive. You have two siblings—one who lives two (2) miles away, and one who lives in another state. You have two (2) papers due in your classes the same week that one (1) of your children has a soccer tournament, and the other child has a band concert. You are coaching the soccer team, and you are in charge of fundraising for the band. You have a goal to complete your degree in two (2) years. Your doctor tells you that your blood pressure, your cholesterol, and your weight are too high and recommends several medications that cost you nearly $200 per month after your insurance co-pay.

Scenario 4: You are a sales representative for a company that encourages staff to log time in the field and away from the office. You are expected to begin and end your day at the office. You notice that each day when you arrive and return another co-worker is already there, and you wonder whether this person spends most of his / her time at the office. At your weekly sales meeting, you are informed of your co-workers’ outstanding sales performance. You suspect that this co-worker is spending more time flattering the boss instead of working leads in the field, and as a result is getting the best client referrals. Your own sales numbers have steadily decreased since this other sales representative was hired.

The budgeting process may be approached differently in various firms. Top-down budgeting has its inception with directives from senior management who prepare the budget for staff and assess performance based on objectives established at higher levels. Any additional compensation received occurs as a result of achieving budgetary targets imposed by others. In contrast, bottom-up budgeting reflects the predictions of cost, revenue, profit, and investment center managers—proposed and approved by senior managers. Incentives are negotiated by managers proposing the budget rather than imposed by higher level executives.

Here’s What Happened . . .

You have just been promoted to sergeant in the Community Policing Division of the Centervale Police Department. Your first assignment is to examine the criminal behavior in your area and work with local agencies to develop proactive policies to help reduce criminal activity and lower the overall crime rate. Your jurisdiction covers many different areas; you know that a one-size-fits-all approach will not work. You decide to break down your jurisdiction into smaller areas to tackle them individually.

Area 1 is a low-income area that is often featured in the news for its high murder rate. This area is a transient, high-rent district (for example, the housing is not expensive, but most houses are rented, not owned, by occupants) populated with single-parent households. Most citizens are unemployed, and the high dropout rate paints the school system as being one of the worst in the region.

Area 2 is also a low-income area with a lot of property crime but with an overall lower crime rate than that in Area 1. Many employed dual-parent households have purchased their homes through government programs instead of opting to rent. Although the schools are better and the dropout rate is relatively lower than that in Area 1, the dropout rate is still higher than the national average.

Area 3 is culturally diverse and continually changes and grows every year. Although the overall crime rate has risen slowly, unemployment is high, property crime is high, and violent crime is high. Specifically, Area 3 has an unusually high murder rate.

Area 4 has both employed, high-income families and employed, low-income families. Because land costs less, expensive houses continue to be built in low-income areas. The Centervale Police Department reports an extremely high number of calls-for-service from citizens residing in high-income housing in low-income neighborhoods, who report frequent incidents of vandalism and other property crimes.

Here’s What You Need To Do . . .

Review the details and prepare a 3–4-page report that discusses the criminal activity in these areas. Compose your paper based on the following points:

1. Analyze and evaluate each area. Based on your knowledge of the explanations of crime, identify and discuss key factors (for example, biological, environmental, and cultural) that may influence criminal activity.
