The US population is aging, and the life expectancy of the average adult is increasing. According to the US Census Bureau (2009), by 2050, 20 percent of the total population will consist of people who are sixty-five years or older. There are several issues that challenge older adults from myths regarding aging to the significant life changes such as retirement.

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Conducting and Evaluating an Interview

By Monday, February 8, 2016 complete the assignment presented below.

During the first week of class you conducted your first practice interview, and in week three you developed an Interview Guide. For this activity, you will be using your Interview Guide, the analysis of potential interview biases from LASA 1, and the feedback you have received from your instructor to conduct an interview with a volunteer.

Prior to the Interview

1. 1. Locate an adult volunteer.
   2. Read the analysis requirements below and ENSURE you meet them within your interview. Make sure your interview includes:
      1. A minimum of 5 open and 5 closed ended questions (10 total).

1. Gather Recording Equipment (video is preferred).  You will need to record your interview.
2. Also make sure you have a watch or a timer to keep track of the length of your interview. Make sure your interview is not less than 5 minutes long.

The Interview

1. Needs to be at least 5 minutes long, but it should not be more than 10 minutes.
2. Be prepared! Although it may not sound like it, 5 minutes is a long time in interviewing time. If you are having problems filling 5 minutes, go back to the interview skills you have learned about (e.g., probing, reflections, and summaries).

After the Interview

1. 1. Play back the recording of the interview.
   2. Transcribe or write out the interview completely. Be sure to write outeverything said during the interview
   3. After you have written the transcript of the interview, provide a detailed analysis of the interview. On your transcript:

Application: Developing a Health Advocacy Campaign

To be an effective advocate and to develop a successful health advocacy campaign, you must have a clear idea of the goals of your campaign program and be able to communicate those goals to others. In addition, it is the nature of nurses to want to help, but it is important to make sure that the vision you develop is manageable in size and scope. By researching what others have done, you will better appreciate what can realistically be accomplished. It is also wise to determine if others have similar goals and to work with these people to form strategic partnerships. Over the next 3 weeks, you will develop a 9- to 12-page paper that outlines a health advocacy campaign designed to promote policies to improve the health of a population of your choice. Book Report Format/Guide

 

The following format will be used for the Book Review for this course.

I.  Introduction:

A.  Introduce your review appropriately.  Identify the author, the title, the main topic or issue presented in the book and the author’s purpose in writing the book.  (First few sentences)

B.  Explain Relationships.  As you write, consider the following questions: (No more than a page)

•What type of book is this?  (Is the book a memoir, a collection of facts, a biography, etc.?  Is the book a documentary, a write-up of primary research, a position paper, etc.)?

•What does the preface or foreword tell you about the author’s purpose, background, and credentials?  What is the author’s approach to the topic (as a journalist? a historian? a researcher?)?

•What is the main topic or problem addressed?  How does the work relate to a discipline, to a profession, to a particular audience, or to other works on the topic?  Who’s the audience for this book?

•What are the author’s basic premises for writing this book?

•What issues are raised, or what themes emerge?

•What situation(s) provide a basis for the author’s assertions?

II.  Evaluate the book.  This is the heart of your book review.  You should discuss a variety of issues here found in each chapter and discuss the problem and the author solution suggested in the chapter. Hence you should do a chapter by chapter analysis to acquire this information.  (Three to four pages)

III.  Conclusion.  Tie together any issues raised in the review and provide a concise comment on the book and whether or not you would recommend this book to someone else.  (No more than one page)

•Did the author achieve his goal?  How did he do this or fall short?

•What are the author’s most important points?  List at least two examples of how the author proved or did not prove points he was trying to make.
