DISCUSSION

Ebola at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital

  • Watch the video titled “Full interview: Matt Lauer and Dallas nurse Briana Aguirre” (17 min 26 s), located athttp://www.today.com/video/today/56243958#56243958. Texas Presbyterian nurse Briana Aguirre who treated Ebola stricken colleagues announced publicly that her protective outfit had rips, as well as gaps in it – exposing body parts to the potentially deadly Ebola virus. She claimed that hospital administration ignored her concerns when she brought it to their attention, and she was given no Ebola training. Briana Aguirre has received praise from colleagues and the media for going public with this information, as well as harsh criticism for being a “whistleblower” from other colleagues and the media. In your opinion, did Briana Aguirre act ethically or unethically in going public with this information? Should she be fired from the Texas Presbyterian hospital? Support or challenge Briana Aguirre’s decision to go public with this information.

Write an eight (8) slide presentation in which you:

  1. Provide a title slide (as indicated in the format requirements below) followed by a slide with an introduction to your presentation.
  2. Presentation should include your choice of the five (5) challenges you believe organizations will face in the next twenty (20) years. Only include one (1) challenge and your explanation for choosing that challenge per slide for a total of five (5) slides.
  3. Provide one (1) summary slide which addresses key points of your paper.
  4. Narrate each slide, using a microphone, indicating what you would say if you were actually presenting in front of an audience.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Format the PowerPoint presentation with headings on each slide and three to four (3-4) relevant graphics (photographs, graphs, clip art, etc.), ensuring that the presentation is visually appealing and readable from 18 feet away. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a title slide containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date.

DISCUSSION

  • You are now deciding on resources for a project team. You have a choice to staff a team of resources who will be dedicated (or allocated) 100% to the project, or staff a team of resources who will be dedicated (or allocated) part time to your project; however, they will dedicate 100% to the activities you assigned them. Using information from the readings, which set of resources will you choose? Or, will you choose a combination of both? Why?

Explain the difference between a person who has to maintain a strict regimen of healthy living and diet to not be obese and a person who is diagnosed with an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa.

Assignment 1: Discussion Assignment

The discussion assignment provides a forum to discuss the relevant topics for this week based on the course competencies covered. For this assignment, there are two parts. Make sure to answer all questions for Part 1 and Part 2 by Wednesday, February 3, 2016. Provide a detailed response to the topic questions in the Discussion Area. For this assignment, post your responses directly in the Discussion Area. Do not use attached documents.

To support your work, make sure to utilize your course and text readings. When asked, also utilize outside sources. As in all assignments, make sure to cite your sources in your work and provide references for those citations utilizing APA format.

Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between one or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Complete your participation for this assignment by Sunday, February 7, 2016.

Part 1:

In this era of concerns about health, diet, and obesity, there are a multitude of diets and weight loss products (including pills and surgery) on the market. The social norms seem to be shifting to a healthier lifestyle, with obesity being targeted as a major health problem. This leads individuals to seek help in weight loss and obesity. For example, in order to be successful after bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery), a person has to change his or her lifestyle—which often includes monitoring what he or she eats and when.

  • Explain the difference between a person who has to maintain a strict regimen of healthy living and diet to not be obese and a person who is diagnosed with an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa.
  • Review the National Institute of Mental Health’s information regarding eating disorders. Describe the symptoms of anorexia nervosa and provide an explanation of the common factors relating to acquiring the disorder, how it is diagnosed, and its treatment.

Part 2:

Impulse control can be defined as an inability to control the desire for a substance or act. The lack of impulse control is seen as a factor related to substance abuse but it is not the only factor. Research information on addictions and the two types of addictions (substance addictions and behavioral addictions). Choose one substance addiction and one behavioral addiction and answer the following:

  • Describe each addiction including potential genetic and environmental factors leading to the addiction. Describe the common symptoms, especially those that impact the person both physically and psychologically. Describe the common treatments for the disorders.
  • Explain why a person with an addiction may have a difficult time accepting he or she has an addiction, seeking treatment, and abstaining from the addiction without relapsing.

Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your text and course readings. Comment on the postings of at least two peers, and provide an analysis of each peer’s postings while also suggesting specific additions or clarifications for improving the discussion question response.

Describe the different time periods that are in the GT and describe each Era in a short paragraph along with details on its characteristics.

PROJECT 4

1. The Big Bang Theory (now a law!!)
Before we start with the geologic history of Earth, we need to know how the Earth came into existence and for that matter how did this universe come into existence. So, do a little bit of research into the ‘Big Bang’ theory, now a law after what Hubble Space Telescope discovered a few years back, and then describe in your own words what this Theory states and how did our solar system come into existence!

You may describe each Stage of the BBT if you wish, as that way it is quite simpler to do so.

2. Geologic timescale on earth
In the reading assignment for this week, there are a number of Eras and Epochs described and before we go into details about each one of them and find out what kind of rocks or habitat existed at that time, let’s first check out the Geologic Timescale on Earth.

Describe the different time periods that are in the GT and describe each Era in a short paragraph along with details on its characteristics.

3. Describe one era of your choice!!
Which of the Eras that you described above is meaningful to you? Why? Explain, giving examples and description of the events, organisms and geology related to that Era.

4a. Visit the Virtual Caves website: http://www.goodearthgraphics.com/virtcave/. Briefly describe and provide an example of solution caves, sea caves, erosional caves, and lava tube caves.

Should Matthew Yachts, Inc. stay in the business of building standard, fixed-design yachts?

Matthew Yachts, Inc.
Matthew Yachts, located in Montauk, Long Island, manufactured sailing yachts of all descriptions. The company had begun by building custom-designed yachts for a largely New York-based clientele. Custom-designed yachts still accounted for three-fifths of Matthew’s unit sales and four-fifths of its dollar sales and earnings. Over the years, as Matthew Yachts’ reputation for quality design and workmanship spread, sales broadened to cover all of the eastern seaboard.

In an effort to capitalize on this increased recognition and to secure a piece of the fastest growing market in sailing, Matthew Yachts began manufacturing a new standard, fixed-design craft. Matthew attacked only the high end of this market, as the boat measured 37 feet long. Nevertheless, even this end of the market was more price-sensitive and less conscious of performance than Matthew Yacht’s custom-design customers were.

All of the company’s yachts were manufactured at the Montauk plant and shared the same equipment and skilled labor force. Custom designs were given priority in scheduling, and the new boat was rotated into the schedule only when demand slackened. As sales of the fixed-design boat increased, however, scheduling the new boat on a regular basis became necessary.

Matthew Yachts were built basically from the bottom up. Fabricating hulls was the first step. Increasingly, fiberglass hulls were demanded for their speed and easy maintenance. Afterward came the below-deck woodworking, followed by the fiberglass and woodworking on the deck itself. The masts were turned and drilled separately. Masts and hull were then joined and the finish work completed.

Over the past year, as the fixed-design craft continued its steady increase in sales, costs and deliveries began to slide precipitously, especially on the fixed-design yachts. During this period, when push came to shove, construction of the fixed-design craft always yielded time and resources to the higher-profit-margin custom designs. As a result, many fixed-design yachts were strewn around the yard in various stages of construction. Moreover, space in the existing shipyard was becoming scarce, and a plant expansion of one sort or another appeared inevitable.

Discussion Question

1. Should Matthew Yachts, Inc. stay in the business of building standard, fixed-design yachts?

2. If Matthew Yachts does so, how should it continue?

What is the meaning of a derived demand?

Answer the following questions using examples and applications from the readings.  Justify your answers using economic concepts and ideas as they apply. Each response should be between 100-200 words.

Questions:

  1. The demand for labor is said to be a “derived” demand.  What is the meaning of a derived demand? How does this concept help to determine the demand for labor?
  2. What are some of the factors that determine the supply of labor in a market? What significant factors have changed the supply of labor over the last twenty years?
  3.  How does a firm determine its prices and the quantity of labor required in the resource market during a specific period?
  4.  Why do income inequalities exist?  How are income inequalities measured? How have income inequalities changed from 1980 to the present?
  5. What is the role of the U.S. government, in terms of dealing with the problem of income inequalities?  What are the arguments, for and against, government involvement in this area?
  6. Why do nations trade?  What is meant by the concept of “Comparative Advantage”?  Could a nation be better off economically, if it practiced an isolation policy?
  7. The United States has had a significant trade imbalance for several years.  What are the problems associated with having a negative trade balance?  What can be done to correct the imbalance?
  8. How are exchange rates determi

How does health literacy influence consumer choices and behaviors?

Consumer Health Choices and Behaviors

Manufacturing and pharmaceutical are two types of firms that aggressively market the over-the-counter or prescription drugs they produce. This Discussion will focus on the impact that marketing strategies have on consumers as well as address your own purchasing experiences.

To prepare for this Discussion, visit the Walden Library and find two articles about consumer buying habits that address the following questions.

  • Do consumers base their product choices on price, brand, or research findings?
  • Are there variations with respect to demographics?

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Post a comprehensive response to the following:

  • How does health literacy influence consumer choices and behaviors?
  • Provide an example of how marketing, the media, and your level of health literacy has impacted at least one choice you’ve made as a health consumer.
  • Offer 2-3 examples of how health literacy of individuals and the nation may be improved.

How could your own interests, talents, and skills benefit this organization?

The Rough Draft

Throughout the course, you have been working toward your final project.  This week, you will be submitting a rough draft of that project. Using the information from your outline, your bibliography, and your literature review, combine the information to create a rough draft (you will have the opportunity for this to be reviewed by your instructor and your peers). Pay close attention to the following criteria to ensure you covered everything.

While this is a rough draft of your project, keep in mind that the more complete your draft, the greater chance you have to receive relevant and constructive feedback.

Once you have completed your work, post it to “The Rough Draft” forum (we will return to this forum in our peer review activity in week six).

You have three options in how you can present your final project:

As a Paper

Your paper should be creative and interesting, and demonstrate what you have learned.  It should be a minimum of 5-7 pages in length and you will use APA style formatting with a title page and reference section.  You should use Times New Roman, 12pt. font, double-space your lines, and set your page up with one inch margins (See the APA Template included in the Course Resources folder)

As a Presentation

Like the paper option, your presentation should be creative, interesting, and demonstrate what you have learned throughout the project. Your presentation should be 8 to 10 minutes in length, include visual elements (graphics, pictures, etc.), be presented using a program such as PowerPoint or Prezi, and you should record yourself giving the presentation (consider using screen capture programs such as JING or Eyejot to record your voice—be aware, you may need to create more than one file).

As a Speech

As it is in the other two options, your speech should be creative, interesting, and demonstrate what you have learned throughout the project.  Your speech should be 8 to 10 minutes in length and include a typed handout.

For All Assignment Types

Your assignment should be well-organized and demonstrate an orderly flow of information that clearly addresses the subject chosen.  In addition to the above criteria, your final project should include the following elements:

The Community Organization: Clearly indicate the focus of the organization and the community needs that the organization. A brief historical background of the organization should also be included.

  • Discuss any community partnerships that they have.  Suggest additional partnerships that you feel they should have.
  • Explore how the cross-cultural challenges and humanitarian considerations are involved.
  • Demonstrate how the organization uses volunteers and the economic benefits associated with this (not just “free labor”).
  • Illustrate any roadblocks that the organization has faced or potential could face and how they did or might find solutions.
  • Describe the organization’s vision for the future.
  • Indicate what areas in which you feel the organization could improve.  What challenges (technological, political, economic, laws and regulations, community-based initiatives, educational, etc.) will they need to overcome?
  • Discuss potential ways you might be able to contribute to the organization.  How could your own interests, talents, and skills benefit this organization?

Research:

  • You will need to include a minimum of ten (10) sources to support your project claims.
  • Additionally, you will need to ensure the sources you choose are no more than five (5) years old.

Writing:

  • Title your Project
  • Introduction: Begin with the attention-getter, tie in the background information, and end the introduction with your thesis.
  • Body:
    • Clearly identify the topic of each section. The topic must be a statement, not a question, and should begin with your own ideas and your own words.
    • After identifying your topic, use quotations or paraphrase from your sources to help illustrate the point you are making (be sure to identify the author(s) and source(s)).
    • After you have given support, spend a sentence or two explaining how the example(s) support the section topic.
    • A compilation of your research, your literature review, your methods, (how the data was collected or generated and analyzed), and your results should be included in the body of your project.
  • Conclusion:
    • Restate your thesis.  This means that you say about the same thing as you did in your thesis, but you say it differently.
    • After stating your thesis, restate the topics from each of your body sections and emphasize what is important for your audience/readers to remember.
    • End your conclusion with a call to action that illustrates what your audience/readers should do with the information you presented.
