How does this technology and analytical method support an ethical and successful business?

Select one of the technologies mentioned in this week’s introduction (MRP, ERP, DSS, Expert Systems, software simulations) and one analytical method and research it in the library.  Then, write a paper that summarizes the selected technology and analytical method and how these are used in decision making.  Compare and contrast how these have been used by two real-world businesses.  Begin your paper with an introduction that states a thesis and explains how the body of the paper is arranged to support it.  Close the paper with a conclusion in which you summarize and synthesize the main points presented in your paper.

Consider the following as you prepare your paper:

  • How does this technology and analytical method support an ethical and successful business?
  • Does this technology and analytical method support communications at all levels of the organizations you selected? Why or why not?
  • How does this technology and analytical method influence approaches to decision making?

Support your paper with a minimum of five scholarly resources.  In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.

Length: 10-12 pages, not including title and reference pages

Identify and analyze the main issues and discuss them in the context of relevant developmental theory, as well as societal influences.

Assignment 2: State of America’s Children

In today’s global world, how do the children of the U.S. fare? Are they prepared to compete in the international arena? The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) is a nonprofit child advocacy organization that provides a voice for children who cannot speak for themselves. The State of America’s Children 2014 is the CDF’s report highlighting some crucial issues affecting our children today. Visit the CDF Web site and read the report:

Children’s Defense Fund (CDF). (2014). State of America’s children 2014. Retrieved from http://www.childrensdefense.org/library/state-of-americas-children/

Select a topic of interest to you from the report’s table of contents (after pulling up the website, you can scroll down to select a topic). Write a research paper on the topic. Be sure to include the following:

  • Present the CDF findings on the topic in a table or graph that you create. Note how different populations are affected. For example, you might compare your state to national statistics or compare the top or bottom states on the topic you chose, compare racial/ethnic group data, etc.
  • Research the selected topics using at least one additional resource. The data and research publication sections at the CDF Web site offer useful publications.
  • Identify and analyze the main issues and discuss them in the context of relevant developmental theory, as well as societal influences. Why is this data and the information you researched important to understand in the context of child development?
  • Present your conclusions and support them with research information. What recommendations would you offer to address this issue for future generations?

Write a 4-5 page research paper in Word format. Be sure to include introductory and concluding paragraphs in your

Is there a control or comparison group against which to assess the performance of the experimental group?

Source Summary
You should be very careful to avoid plagiarism when summarizing your sources. All source content in your summaries should be in your own words (preferred) or in quotation marks with page numbers provided (try to avoid quotes). Keeping plagiarism out of your summaries is an important step in keeping it out of your literature review. DO NOT JUST READ AND SUMMARIZE THE ABSTRACT! READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED.

1. Identify the main research hypothesis or thesis.

2. Describe how the researchers tested their hypothesis/hypotheses. In other words, describe their methodology (what they did, including what behaviors they recorded, how often they observed the primates, how they recorded the data, etc), the participants (who were they, how many were used/observed, where were they housed, where were they from), and a brief overview of the procedure.

3. Describe what the researchers found (focus on their main findings from the results section, discussion, and conclusions). Make sure that you understand their overall results, including the statistics and charts/graphs/figures they reported.

Source Evaluation (Excerpted from Galvan, 2006, p. 8)
In addition to summarizing the relevant information from a source, you should also evaluate the information in the source. Critique/analysis of the literature is an important part of a good article summary.

• Are there any obvious problems with the way the authors are discussing the background literature, their methods, or misconstruing their findings? Explain.

• Are there any obvious biases from the authors trying to downplay abnormal behaviors or justify what they are doing for human good? Explain.

• Did you notice any other flaws? Explain.

• Overall, do you think the research makes an important contribution to advancing knowledge?

Critical Reading (Excerpted from Lawson, 1999)
You should find the following questions useful as you evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each of your sources.

• What is the quality of the evidence used to support the claim?

• Is there a control or comparison group against which to assess the performance of the experimental group?

• Is the person concluding there is a causal relationship on the basis of correlational data?

• Are there confounding variables that might account for the findings, or are there confounding variables that they are not considering (e.g. exposure to humans on a daily basis, invasive experimental procedures, single housing)?

• Has the person made it impossible to falsify his or her theory or hypothesis? Does he or she consider positive evidence as support for the theory but negative evidence as not being relevant?

• Is the person acknowledging that complex behaviors or phenomena have multiple causes?

What are some of the changes that the AFSA has effectuated when it comes to foster care and adoption?

In cases where children are not returned to their biological families, the courts have to find safe, permanent homes for them, including adoptive homes. It is especially difficult in cases where the children have special needs, such as mental retardation or cerebral palsy. In 1997, The U.S. Congress enacted legislation that sought to correct the problems inherent with the foster care system and achieving permanency for special needs children.

Write 2-3 pages detailing the provisions of The Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997(AFSA).

  • Be sure to include the following in your essay:
    • What was the purpose the AFSA?
    • What are some of the programs that the AFSA funds?
    • Who was the major proponent of the AFSA and why?
    • What are some of the changes that the AFSA has effectuated when it comes to foster care and adoption?
    • What provisions does the AFSA have for children with special needs?
