Topic: Corporate governance

The resit assignment task (outlined below) is the same as the original group assignment task. You are asked to re-work the assignment based on the feedback provided to you.
For this assignment, you are asked to conduct an empirical analysis on the link between board structure & composition, and firm performance, using a sample of UK listed companies.
You are asked to work in teams of 4-5. Each team must select a sample of 30 UK listed companies from Morningstar Company Intelligence (available under Learning Centre, electronic databases). For each of the companies, you are asked to collate data for the following variables (year 2014 or 2015 if available) and input these into SPSS:
1) Company size: Turnover, number of employees,
2) Company performance: ROCE, EPS, degree of internationalisation (% turnover derived from non-UK activities – from company facts report)
3) Board data: size of board, proportion of non-executive directors, proportion of women directors, average age of board, number of interlocking directorships
You are then asked to write a report on the relationship between corporate governance characteristics and firm performance which should include:
a) An introduction to your report and your selected companies (including an explanation of your sampling procedures).
b) A summary of descriptive statistics for key variables in your sample (min & max values, mean, standard deviation), and necessary variable transformations
c) The results from statistical tests about the relationship between board variables and firm performance, controlling for firm size
d) A discussion of your results. Here, you should discuss which organisational theories best explain your empirical observations and what other explanations there may be for your results.
e) A concluding summary in which you put forward recommendations on corporate governance that can influence companies’ performance, including internationalisation.

Find three different financial statements that have varying capital structures.

Find three different financial statements that have varying capital structures. Write a paragraph about each that explains the debt-equity relationship and that computes the percentage of debt and the percentage of equity represented.503504
Also note whether the percentage of annual interest on debt is revealed in the notes to the financial statements. If so, do you believe the interest rate is fair and equitable? Why?

Great Docs, a three-physician practice with two office sites, is considering whether to buy or lease a new computer system. Currently they own a low-tech (and low-cost) information system. The new system will have to meet all government specifications for an electronic health record system and will also have to connect the two office sites. It will be considerably more sophisticated than the current hardware and software and thus will require training for office staff, clinical staff, and the physicians. Everyone agrees there will be a learning curve in order to reach the system’s full potential.
Doctor Smith, the majority owner of the practice, wants to buy a medical records system from Sam’s Club. He argues that the package is supposed to electronically prescribe, track billings, set appointments, and keep records, so it should meet their needs. The cost of the first installed system is supposed to be $25,000, plus $10,000 for each additional system. The doctors are not sure if this means $25,000 for one office site plus $10,000 for the (connected) second office site for a total of $35,000, or if this means $25,000 for the first installed system plus $10,000 each for three more doctors, for a total of $55,000. There is also supposed to be $4,000 to $5,000 in maintenance costs each year as part of the purchased package. Doctor Smith proposes to pay 20% down and obtain a five-year installment loan from the local bank for the remaining 80% at an interest rate of 8%.
Doctor Jones, the youngest of the three physicians, has been recently added to the practice. A computer nerd, he wants to lease a complete system from the small company his college roommate began last year. While he has received a quote of $20,000 for the entire system including first year maintenance, it does not meet the government requirements for an electronic health record system. Consequently, the other two doctors have outvoted Doctor Jones and this system will not be seriously considered.
Doctor Brown, the usual peace-maker between Doctor Smith and Doctor Jones, wants to lease a system. He argues that leasing will place the responsibility for upgrades and maintenance upon the lessor company, and that removing the responsibilities of ownership is advantageous. He has received a quote of $20,000 per year for a five-year lease that includes hardware and software for both offices, that meets the government requirements for an electronic health record system, and that includes training, maintenance, and upgrades.

Summarize the costs to the practice of owning a system (per Doctor Smith) versus leasing (per Doctor Brown). Include a computation of comparative present value.

Metropolis Health System has to do something about their ambulance situation. They have to (1) buy a new ambulance, (2) lease a new one, or (3) renovate an existing ambulance that MHS already owns. Rob Lackey, the Assistant Controller, has been asked to gather pertinent information in order to make a decision. So far Rob has found these facts:505506 1. It will cost at least $250,000 to purchase a new ambulance, although the cost varies widely depending upon the quantity and sophistication of the emergency equipment contained on the vehicle. 2. In order to renovate the existing vehicle, it will cost at least $100,000 to purchase and install a new “box.” (In other words, a new emergency-equipped body is installed on the existing chassis.) Rob has found this existing ambulance has an odometer reading of 80,000 miles. The vehicle will also need a new fuel pump and new tires, but he believes these items would be recorded as repair and maintenance operating expenses and thus would not be included in his calculations. 3. Lease terms for ambulances also vary widely, but so far Rob believes a cost of $60,000 per year is a ballpark figure.

Required

How much more information should Rob have before he begins to make any calculations? Make a list. Which alternative do you believe would be best? Give your reasons.

Aminah Rachedi (nurse educator)
Recently appointed to position as nurse educator at local community hospital. This is a first lead role at this hospital. She just completed master’s degree in nursing education and eager to apply her knowledge. Chief of nursing officer has invited her in to discuss of lack of quality and consistency in existing training of volunteers for the hospital volunteer program. The CNO would like to nursing education to take over training. Therefore, CNO charged to Aminah(educator)developing new training course for hospital volunteers. Aminah recognized this is particular challenges because of the diversity of the students.
Her current volunteers
1. 2 high school students
2. College intern majoring in kinesiology
3. 2 stay-at –home moms
4. Retired bus driver
5. Retired soft-ware developer

When developing a class for an audience with different learning styles and age groups, a variety of learning strategies are needed/ the auditory learner would not appreciate the printed material, while the kinetic will not be comfortable in a formal setting with no breaks or movement. The analytical learner needs a quiet environment while the global learner needs periods of relaxation, soft lightning, and snacks to learn.

Diversity of learning styles- Developmental psychology theories: this would be difficult to label with just one theory. The content of the chapter illustrates the diverse ways that people learn. The theories from developmental psychology (PP. 405-406) would also be applicable.
Adult learners- Adult learning theory: Adult learning theory (PP.402-204). Note especially the relationship between experience and motivation (P.403)
Reason and motivation –
Cognitive filed theory: Cognitive filed theory states “motivation is key to learning” (P.393)
Physical skills – Behavioral theories: Psychomotor skills are one of the three categories of learning. One of the behavioral learning theories could be applied because they focus on the observable and measurable aspects of human behavior (P.388).

QUANTITATIVE
Task
Project proposals should:
• Be a maximum of 1,500 words in length
• Include the following:
o Title of study
o Introduction
o Aims & Objectives
o Methods
o Proposed analysis
o Work plan
o References
Learning outcomes
By its completion, you should have:
1. demonstrated the ability to conduct a literature review
2. demonstrated the ability to formulate hypotheses or research questions
3. demonstrated the ability to design a research project
Coursework requirements
The project proposal is an essential component of the module as it reflects your progress in
developing your research methods skills and competencies and enables us to assess
whether your project is suitable (academically, practically and ethically). You should develop
your proposal in liaison with your allocated project supervisor. The proposal must be a
maximum of 1,500 words in length, excluding references and appendices. It must be wordprocessed
double-spaced. Do not include any unnecessary pages. Your proposal needs to
be submitted via Moodle.
The proposal must be in the following format with the required sub-headings in bold:
Title of study
The title should express clearly the nature or purpose of the study without using
unnecessary words. For example, it should not be “An experiment to study perception of
complex sounds”, but “Perception of complex sounds”.
Introduction
Previous research having relevance to your study should be summarised and referenced
here. At the proposal stage, you are only expected to summarise and reference key sources
(normally approximately five references should have been read and cited). You should
always avoid referring to standard textbooks; instead you should be accessing original
journal articles or book chapters. Your summary of key literature should make clear the
psychological issue(s) that you are investigating and the rationale for your study should
follow logically from that. Can your reader clearly identify the topic area you are going to
address?
2
Aims & Objectives
This section should include a statement of the purpose of the study. It should contain the
reasons for carrying out the study and the specific hypotheses to be tested or research
questions to be addressed.
Methodology
Participants
In this section, indicate how many participants will take part, who they will be and how they
will be selected. However, present only relevant information such as gender, age-range etc.
Materials
Include information about any equipment or materials that you will use. Generic terms are
usually appropriate, e.g. “IBM type PC”.
Design
Here you should state clearly and simply any variables you are manipulating, any variables
you are measuring and the overall design of the study. If you are doing a qualitative study,
state the nature of the data you will collect and approach you will use when collecting it.
Procedure
You need to provide an exact description of the procedures that you will follow. This
description should enable the reader to understand precisely what the participant will
experience.
Please note, qualitative proposals may use slightly different sub-headings for the
methodology section. It is suggested these are: Participants, Design, Data-collection, but
discuss with your supervisor.
Proposed Analysis
You need to make clear exactly what statistical tests or analytic approach you intend to
perform. It is not sufficient to state that the analysis will involve using SPSS! In the case of
statistical analysis, you need to state the dependent variable under investigation and the
levels of any factors. For the analysis of qualitative data, you need to state which approach
you will use and describe how to conduct the analysis.
Work plan
You should agree goals to be attained by each particular date. If you are intending to carry
out a pilot study (recommended), include time for that. Try to be as detailed as possible –
this will not only help your supervisor determine if the proposed project is feasible in the time
allowed, it will also help you to plan your work.
References
Ensure that these are in APA style. You should only include items in your reference list that
you actually cite in the main body of the text.
