How does River High participate in “institutionalizing heterosexuality and masculinity,” according to Pascoe?

Please read the article “Becoming Mr. Cougar” and then respond to the questions below.

1) C.J. Pascoe, the ethnographic research in this study, identifies a gap in current research dealing with sexualized adolescent identities. What is the potential gap he identifies and how does his research fill this gap?

2) How does River High participate in “institutionalizing heterosexuality and masculinity,” according to Pascoe? Please include at least 2 different examples of how Pascoe uses observations from the school to demonstrate this.

3) Early in the chapter Pascoe discusses some of his frustrations with starting to conduct his research. He mentions the “twin assumptions” schools tend to make regarding teenagers. What are these “twin assumptions” and why does this frustrate Pascoe?

4) Pascoe discusses an interesting juxtaposition between the “official” and “unofficial” gender/sexuality curriculum at the school. Please provide an example of an official and an unofficial part of this curriculum. Does it seem like River High was open to changing any of the “official” policies? Why or why not?

5) Pascoe describes encountering a “cultural object” in his classroom observation with Ms. Mac. How does Pascoe describe the importance of this cultural object and what seems problematic about the teacher’s reaction to this object?

6) In addition to reinforcing heterosexual identities through teaching, Pascoe suggests the teachers also reinforce these behaviors in a more passive way as well. Discuss one or two ways that teachers reinforce masculinity.

7) Discuss a school ritual where the students seemed to be performing gender. How was this a performance that reinforced traditional ideas of heterosexuality?

8) Pascoe talks quite a bit about gender differences in how male and female students are treated by each other and by the school administration but the rules are very different for black students. How do some of these rules differ and why?

9) What was your impression of this study? Was there anything you really agreed or disagreed in terms of Pascoe’s findings?

Nursing Gerontological Due 2/5/16

Assessing and Planning Care for an Elderly Person (5 pgs)

In order to gain an insight into the world of elder adults, it is important to understand how they view themselves and the values they hold. Additionally it is important to assess and determine his/her needs and establish appropriate interventions for this individual.

Choose an older adult to interview. This cannot be a patient in your clinical setting. You can use a friend, family member, or co-worker. The older adult should be 65 years or older. Use the format provided to record the responses. A list of questions is available for you to start with. Include 2–3 questions of your own to get a complete picture of the older adult. Summarize your findings and also contrast the responses with findings in your readings and other current literature.

Attached patient questionnaire should be used as an example.

After gaining permission, conduct a physical and mental functional assessment of the older adult you have chosen. Review your readings for the process of functional assessment.

Make use of the tools discussed this week to complete a comprehensive assessment of your patient. Search the Internet for resources on these tools.

  1. Tinetti Balance and Gait Evaluation
  2. Katz Index of Activities of Daily Living
  3. Assessment of Home Safety
  4. The Barthel Index

Make sure the older adult is clearly identified on the tools. Do not include their name, but do include professional or other designation, and age. Your name should also be identified on the tool. (This should be a part of your Appendix.)

Compare and contrast the age-related changes of the older person you interviewed and assessed with those identified in this week’s reading assignment. During this data analysis process provide at least 4–6 preliminary issues that you have identified. Identify three alterations in health that you would propose and describe them. Identify a minimum of three comprehensive interventions for each problem.

Make sure that you integrate personal cultural awareness and cultural competency.

Paper should be 5 pgs, not including the questionnaire or tools used. These should be attached as an Appendix. Remember to use headings to identify the different sections in your paper.

This Week: Submit Draft of an Abbreviated Qualitative Research Plan

You will apply qualitative research methods this week when you develop a qualitative research plan that seeks to answer your research problem and research question.

To prepare for this Application, first focus on the following instructions:

  • Review Chapter 9 in the course text, Research Design, the “Trustworthiness” handout, and “Qualitative Methods: Examples” from the Course DVD Research Theory, Design, and Methods.
  • Consult Table 9.1 (p. 174) in the course text, Research Methods to guide you in polishing your abbreviated qualitative research plan.
  • Draft an introduction for your abbreviated research plan.

Next, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are your research questions? To what extent can you test them? How would you justify the viability of your questions?
  • Why would this design be the most appropriate for answering the research questions? Conversely, why would quantitative and mixed methods not be appropriate?
  • What approach would you select for this study (ethnography, grounded theory, case study, phenomenology, narrative)? Why is that approach the most appropriate one for answering the research questions?
  • What theoretical framework or perspective would you use?
  • What would be your role as the researcher?
  • What is your target population? How would you identify and recruit participants? What factors would contribute to determining appropriate sample size? You will not need to calculate sample size for this assignment.
  • If appropriate for your plan, what instruments might you need?
  • What data collection procedures might you use? Why would those be the most appropriate methods to use? How would that data help to answer your research question(s)?
  • How would you ensure quality and reliability of data?
  • What are threats to validity? How might you mitigate them?
  • How might you analyze the data?
  • What are the ethical considerations related to the plan?

The assignment:

  • Craft a 2- to 3-page paper in which you
    • Provide an introduction.
    • Provide a purpose statement.

Epidemiology Concepts – Measurement of Health Status

Textbook:
Riegelman, R. K. (2015). Public health 101: Healthy people–healthy populations (2nd ed.). Sudbury, MA: Jones and Bartlett.

Instructions: Please ensure to substantiate your response with scholarly sources or a personal account of your own experience in the work place. Cite and reference work! 150 to 175 word count.

1. View: Read Me First & Weekly overview and discuss Epidemiology. This overview and begins an important discussion of what is likely to be in your future as HealthCare Administrators. As you read this doc, what do you believe will be 2-3 of the most impactful changes in healthcare now and the next couple of years?? Thoughts on this? See attached RMF & WK Overview

2. Please highlight what you found most interesting about Chapter 2. See Chapter 2 attached

3. Please highlight what you found most interesting about Chapter 3. See Chapter 3 attached

4. Read the “Public Health Surveillance in the United States: Evolution and Challenges” article located on the CDC site and discuss your thoughts. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/su6103a2.htm?s_cid=su6103a2_x
5. Open your web browser and search for the video “Doctors Without Borders Part 1.”
Watch the video and discuss your thoughts

Sherly: One of their key role is that they provide care regardless of race, political affiliation, religion , gender, ethnicity etc. and the service they provide is solely for medical needs. It is unbelievable to see the remote areas that they enter into, so remote that donkeys and armored vehicles aid them as a means of transporting medical supplies. Often times there is a constant need for medical care during wars etc. where they were faced with constant treats most of the time. They definitely make the difference between death and life. Based on Kwan’s comment: What reactions do you have to the ideas they presented? Include examples from the course readings or your own experience to support your perspective, and raise questions to continue the dialogue. How did his post influence your thinking? How can you use the information presented in Kwan’s post?
6. Epidemiology and its relevance to community health: What is epidemiology? Why is this important to community health? Provide an example of its importance from your community.

7. Kwan: Everyone has had an experience dealing with some type of cold or flu. People get it no matter how careful they are. Epidemiologists have a very important role in public health in helping to determine types of diseases by examining the target population and location. Normal people like us cannot just assume that we know what kind of disease someone has by the symptoms. History has shown that new diseases can develop and affect different types of people. I was out sick last Thursday because of a strange headache and I was very dizzy. I went to urgent care the same day and found out I had a sinus infection and sore throat. I’m glad that I went to go see a medical professional because I would have just taken an Excedrin and NyQuil. Based on Kwan’s comment: What reactions do you have to the ideas they presented? Include examples from the course readings or your own experience to support your perspective, and raise questions to continue the dialogue. How did his post influence your thinking? How can you use the information presented in Kwan’s post?
8. Julio: Reading about epidemiology helps understands health care professionals the root cause of why diseases occur or why outbreaks happen in the community. You have provided a clear example of one of the most common diseases in communities, the flu. Before, it was not mandated for everyone to get a flu shot every year because different people did not have health care coverage. However, in schools, where risks are higher of contracting diseases due to different populations in the facility, they are required to have vaccinations in order to be able to attend school and to show the kids are safe from contracting diseases. In addition, community health centers actually provide vaccinations for kids attending school under the age of 18 for free to protect the safety of the children. Now with the new health care reform, the implementation of preventative services is more frequent and recommended, which can help public health in the long term by having all adults and everyone that has health insurance get vaccinations such as the flu shot. Based on Julio’s comment: What reactions do you have to the ideas they presented? Include examples from the course readings or your own experience to support your perspective, and raise questions to continue the dialogue. How did his post influence your thinking? How can you use the information presented in Julio’s post?

9. Purpose of public health surveillance: What are the purposes of public health surveillance? How are they implemented and utilized by communities, governmental agencies, and health care organizations or providers?
10. Submit separate: For the next newsletter, you have been asked to provide information about the role of government in public health.
Choose a health issue prevalent in your community- (Use New Jersey State, US).
Research national, state, and local governmental health agency websites for information on your chosen health issue.
Write a 850- to 1,050-word summary of your findings that includes the following:
• Analyze the structure and function of public health at national, state, and local levels. In your analysis, include:
o What type of structure you see between levels of government.
o What functions you see at each level of government.
o How the levels of government work together.
Use specific examples from your research to validate your points.
Include at least 3 APA formatted references.

Write a word paper on what you find to be the biggest difference between a pre-web world and today.

Assignment 1: Life Before the Web

For this assignment you will spend one weekend (or any 48 hour period) without any digital technologies available from the advent of the world wide web onward (early 1990s). This means you may only use your phones as a phone. You may not use any smart feature on your phone. You may not use the internet. You may not use satellite radio. No tablets. Etc.

You may use your computer for word processing and viewing documents. Make sure to get any information you may need over the weekend before you begin this task.

No viewing or listening to media on computers, tablets, phones, iPods, etc.

You may watch television but you may not use the menu feature on your cable box (you have to actually flip through the channels).

You may not watch DVDs. You can play CDs (if you have them).

While video games did exist, modern game systems and powerful computers did not, so no games unless you are playing 80s games or earlier.

Absolutely no social media!
While depriving yourself for a weekend, take note of any time you are about to use your media technologies. Next, you should look back and examine how your life was different than normal over those two days. Finally, you should attempt to imagine how life was most different before our current digital technologies.

Write a 750-1000 word paper on what you find to be the biggest difference between a pre-web world and today. You can focus on positive or negative aspects of our current media technologies. Your paper must include a thesis that you will back up with your experience from the weekend.

Papers will be graded on the strength of your thesis, support for the thesis, grammar, punctuation, format and style.
First draft is due Jan 29
