Ashford 3: – Week 2 – Discussion 2

When to Form the Team

Project teams are an essential part of most projects and depending on the project scope and work scope team membership is likely to change. The question is “When should the PM form a project team?” Provide your response in 200 words or less and support your rationale using the text and outside sources.

Explain in words why the standard deviation is zero when all of the points are the same.

  1. a) Create a set of 5 points that are very close together and record the standard deviation. Next, add a sixth point that is far away from the original 5 and record the new standard deviation.

What is the impact of the new point on the standard deviation? Do not just give a numerical value for the change. Explain what happened to the standard deviation in words.  (4 points)

  1. b) Create a data set with 8 points in it that has a mean of approximately 10 and a standard deviation of approximately 1. Use the second chart to create a second data set with 8 points that has a mean of approximately 10 and a standard deviation of approximately 4. What did you do differently to create the data set with the larger standard deviation? (4 points)

  1. Go back to the spreadsheet and clear the data values from question 1 from the data column and then put values matching the following data set into the data column for the first graph.  (8 points)

50, 50, 50, 50, 50.

Notice that the standard deviation is 0. Explain why the standard deviation for this one is zero. Do not show the calculation. Explain in words why the standard deviation is zero when all of the points are the same. If you don’t know why, try doing the calculation by hand to see what is happening. If that does not make it clear, try doing a little research on standard deviation and see what it is measuring and then look again at the data set for this question.

  1. Go back to the spreadsheet one last time and put each of the following three data sets into one of the graphs. Record what the standard deviation is for each data set and answer the questions below.

Data set 1:       0, 0, 0, 100, 100, 100

Data set 2:       0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100

Data set 3:       0, 40, 45, 55, 60, 100

Note that all three data sets have a median of 50. Notice how spread out the points are in each data set and compare this to the standard deviations for the data sets. Describe the relationship you see between the amount of spread and the size of the standard deviation and explain why this connection exists. Do not give your calculations in your answer—explain in words.  (8 points)

For the last 2 questions, use the Project 1 Data set that is found in Course Content >> Course Guides and Assignment Instructions >> Assignment Instructions in Blackboard.

  1. Explain what an outlier is. Then, if there are any outliers in the Project 1 Data Set, what are they? If there are no outliers, say no outliers. (4 points)
  2. Which 4 temperatures in the data set look to be the most questionable or the most unrealistic to you? Explain why you selected these 4 points. (4 points)

Propose a change that your organization could implement that would aid it strategically.

Using the same organization that you selected in Week 1, propose a change that your organization could implement that would aid it strategically. The proposed change might relate to some area of need, performance deficiency, or other opportunity that you observe in the organization. • Evaluate how the proposed change may affect various groups of employees.
  • Assess the conflicts that might occur before, during, and after the change, including why you anticipate these conflicts.
  • Defend at least three best practices to prevent or resolve those conflicts.

***should be no more than one single-spaced page

Content: This is not a formal paper; it is an informal comment on what you feel you are learning in the class. Each reflection will have three components:
• Describe class readings (what was Volkswagen thinking)
• Reflectively comment on your thoughts prompted by recent class activities and readings (we had to see the video and read the article and discuss those three questions:
▪ Are the actions of Volkswagen wrong?
▪ Who is responsible?
▪ Who is impacted?

• Explain what you do to handle challenges of this course (to own your responsibility to learn) to assure learning success

This class subject is: Business Perspectives – Introduction to Ethical Decision- Making Models
*This course covers two general topics. The first deals with a variety of legal, social and institutional dimensions of the environment within which business is conducted. This will include the relationship between business and the natural environment within which business operates, the relationship between business and the values of the society, the legal and business context within which we find “ethics” in today’s workplace – corporate ethics programs, the Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Organizations, Sarbanes-Oxley, and other business regulations, and the relationship between business, society and Jesuit values. The second aims to help students learn how to work with two different approaches to ethical reasoning: a values approach (which echoes the “virtue ethics: approach taken by most corporate ethics programs), and an approach that connects with the methodology students will be exposed to in their ethics requirement (a secular approach based on an analysis of both the consequences of their actions and the intrinsic merit of the actions themselves).
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
•Understand the relationship between business and the society and the natural environment within which it operates
•Understand the relationship between business and the values of society
•Understand the relationship between business, society and Jesuit values
•Understand the major ethical approaches to ethical reasoning and ethical decision-
making
•Identify, evaluate and analyze ethical dilemmas in business and apply an appropriate
ethical decision-making model to determine a course of action and how to implement that action
