Assignment: Final Project—Business Memo—Selecting and Using Data Resources and Systems

This week you will continue to work on your Final Project, which is due in Week 7. By Day 7, you will submit a business memo, written to your Instructor, that explains how you plan to incorporate your learning from the week into your Final Project. This will not be a “perfect” synopsis at this point, but it should capture the main themes and important ideas from the week. Your memo should include the following:

• Your preliminary summary of how you are planning to incorporate this week’s learning into your Final Project
• Your ideas and recommendations for how your organization can mitigate the short-term and long-term issues that can arise when selecting and using data resources and systems
• Brief descriptions of the types of data resources, data processing, and storage systems chosen
• An explanation of how the organization might manage the potential implications of those selections, while taking advantage of the opportunities they afford to sustain the business or gain a competitive advantage
• Other relevant recommendations or issues that you identified, with a brief analysis of why they are important

(B) I have argued that the different disciplines that attempt to explain the behavior and actions of human beings, drawing upon different perspectives, each conceptualizes or thinks about human beings in fundamentally different ways. A biologist might think of us as bundles of genes with innate biological tendencies, an economist might think of us as rational and utilitarian decision-makers, a psychologist might think of us as a “learning machine” or as a complex bundle of unconscious and repressed emotions, a sociologist might think of us as someone who occupies specific social positions (i.e., upper class, African-American, female).

Perhaps most important, I have argued that since each perspective has something of interest to contribute and that their ideas are complementary to one another rather than being contradictory. In other words, to say that one is greatly affected by rewards and punishments – as do behaviorists – doesn’t invalidate the fact that one’s social class – whether one is rich or poor – also contributes greatly to how one behaves. What does differ – and this is important – is how one might go about trying to modify an individual’s behavior and the policy implications that follow.

Choose an industry you have not yet written about in this course, and one publicly traded corporation within that industry. Research the company on its own Website, the public filings on the Securities and Exchange Commission EDGAR database (http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml), in the University’s online databases, and any other sources you can find. The annual report will often provide insights that can help address some of these questions.

Write an eight to ten (8-10) page paper in which you:

1. Choose the two (2) segments of the general environment that would rank highest in their influence on the corporation you chose. Assess how these segments affect the corporation you chose and the industry in which it operates.
2. Considering the five (5) forces of competition, choose the two (2) that you estimate are the most significant for the corporation you chose. Evaluate how well the company has addressed these two (2) forces in the recent past.
3. With the same two (2) forces in mind, predict what the company might do to improve its ability to address these forces in the near future.
4. Assess the external threats affecting this corporation and the opportunities available to the corporation. Give your opinions on how the corporation should deal with the most serious threat and the greatest opportunity. Justify your answer.
5. Give your opinion on the corporation’s greatest strengths and most significant weaknesses. Choose the strategy or tactic the corporation should select to take maximum advantage of its strengths, and the strategy or tactic the corporation should select to fix its most significant weakness. Justify your choices.
6. Determine the company’s resources, capabilities, and core competencies.
7. Analyze the company’s value chain to determine where they can create value using the resources, capabilities, and core competencies discussed above.

Governments collect most of their revenue to fund public budgets through taxation. Without taxation, government would not be able to provide most goods and services. It is, therefore, imperative to understand the main types of taxation levied in the United States and their advantages and disadvantages.

In a three to four-page APA style paper (not including the title and reference pages), discuss the three major tax structures: income, sales, and property taxes, and the advantages and disadvantages of each according to at least three of the criteria for evaluating revenue options: adequacy of revenue production, equity, economic effects, collectability, and transparency. Situation A:  You are deployed in a country.  A raid went wrong, and your squad opened fire on several innocent people.  Your commander asks you and the rest of the squad to make it look like they opened fire up on you first.  How would you respond?

Situation B: As a police officer, you pull someone over.  After searching their vehicle, you confiscate several ounces of marijuana.  The computer system is down so you cannot chronicle this bust.  Your partner tells you that his wife is sick and he could really use that marijuana at home for medicinal purposes to help her with her pain.  How would you respond to your partner?

Situation C:  As a parent, your child has a first year teacher who gives ridiculously hard assignments.  Your kid has a four year scholarship waiting for him if he can pass this last course – even with a C.  The last assignment is an assignment that you did your graduate work on – so you know there’s no way a high schooler should be expected to do this assignment – but if your child fails this assignment, they would lose a four year scholarship.  Do you actively help them complete the assignment – or let them do it themselves – knowing they can’t do the assignment themselves and the assignment is likely to be poor because it was an inappropriately assigned paper.
