Assignment 1: The Primary Care Clinic

Due Week 4 and worth 160 points

You are the manager of a new primary care clinic located about twenty five (25) miles outside of a small city (population of 50,000). With five (5) family physicians, two (2) nurse practitioners, two (2) physicians’ assistants (PAs), and twenty (20) clinical support staff consisting of RNs, LPNs, and CMAs, the clinic provides primary care services to a diverse community of people living and working outside the city limits. Originally a rural area, the community has been growing and now includes promising opportunities in employment, education, and comfortable living spaces for young families. However, there are still many residents who struggle to make ends meet with older farms that have belonged to families for generations.

The central city includes two (2) large acute care facilities, and one (1) tertiary care facility that is known for its excellent pulmonary care. Both acute care hospitals provide the usual services such as labor and delivery, outpatient surgery, chronic diseases care, etc. and have fully equipped ancillary departments, such as lab and radiology. Up until this point, the residents have used the facilities’ emergency departments for routine illnesses and conditions when their private physicians were not readily available.

Write a five to seven (5-7) page paper in which you:

1. Analyze some of the key social, political, and economic factors that have led to the proliferation of urgent care facilities and primary care practices over the last 20-30 years.
2. Create a comprehensive mission statement for the clinic, and discuss how it will facilitate the provision of quality services.
3. Analyze and discuss one (1) or more directions the clinic might take to grow its business. Determine what factors you would consider when deciding what services to provide in-house and which ones to affiliate with other institutions.
4. Decide how you will determine if the clinic is meeting its goals. Identify three (3) performance measurements you could use to evaluate the success of the clinic’s services. Begin by naming a goal, and then identify a quantifiable measurement you could use for each to determine if you are coming close or falling short of the goal.
5. Determine how you would then address whatever opportunities for improvement seem to exist and what processes you would put in place.
6. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.
7. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
   1. Typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
   2. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.

Overview:

Through the readings and the lectures this week, we have discussed the nature of service-learning and the gains that can often be associated with community involvement.   We have also discussed the meaning of community and the importance of becoming active in its betterment.  While it is valuable to look at our communities and assess the problems that need to be addressed and the opportunities to aid in solving those issues, it is important to start by assessing our own strengths and weaknesses to identify opportunities to better ourselves.

This week’s assignment is all about you.  Unlike the other assignments in this course, your work in this assignment will be a private conversation (of sorts) between you and your instructor.  Be as honest as you can in your assessment so you can use this information to make the most of your education as you move forward in this class and through your future learning experiences.

What is a SWOT analysis?

If you are a business student, chances are, you’ve been asked to create a SWOT analysis on a company or organization in one or more of your previous courses.  For other students, this may be a new experience.  In either case, you should find this a useful tool.

A SWOT analysis is a tool for evaluating the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (or SWOT) associated with something—usually a company, organization, or project, but can be applied to analyze an idea, an argument, or, as we are doing in this assignment, a person.

We separate the ideas of strengths and weaknesses as internal factors (personal strengths and weaknesses), from the ideas of opportunities and threats as external factors (outside opportunities and threats to learning).  These factors are usually presented in a chart with bullet-points followed by a brief narrative about each factor.

The first step in completing a SWOT analysis is to identify the specific areas being analyzed.  For the purposes of this assignment, you are asked to analyze the skills you acquired throughout your general education so far.  The categories we will analyze are defined as:

1. Communication skills;

2. Critical thinking skills;

3. Respect for diversity;

4. Professional, social, and ethical responsibility; and

5. Lifelong learning practices

(see “University Learning Outcomes” as defined in the Grantham University Catalog).

Assignment Criteria:

Complete a personal SWOT analysis evaluating your understanding and skills in the five following categories:

1. Communication skills;

2. Critical thinking skills;

3. Respect for diversity;

4. Professional, social, and ethical responsibility; and

5. Lifelong learning practices

Your assignment should include:

1. A SWOT graph with bullet-points defining your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats as they relate to the five university learning objectives.
2. A brief narrative describing each defined trait.

There is no page-length requirement for this assignment, however; you should make every effort to provide a complete and accurate personal analysis.  Pay close attention to detail, including grammar, usage, design, and depth.  You may want to take the time to create several drafts before submitting the final version of this assignment

• Discuss how the use of social media has impacted you personally as a consumer.
• What social media networks do you find to be the most influential on your personal choices and why?
• Is social media a reliable tool when promoting public policy?
• What role do you think social media will play on consumer behavior in the future? Defend your position.

  • What is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?
  • What motivates people in each level of Maslow’s Hierarchy?
  • Provide an example of what could be done to move a person to a higher level of the hierarchy within your work group.
