Background:

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has described five core competencies (CCs) required of health professionals to improve professional practice and patient outcomes (IOM, 2003). Quality and Safety Education for Nurses QSEN has expanded these to include knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) that nurses demonstrate in six areas (Cronenwett, et al., 2007):

Directions:

Now, consider this real-life situation: You are now a BSN RN, with five years’ experience and demonstrated competence and leadership. You are quite proud of your colleagues (the healthcare team) and the quality care you provide to your clients/ patients (in the healthcare setting of your choice). However, you feel your unit could improve in one or more of the IOM core competencies.

For this paper, you are to examine one (or more) of the CCs, and briefly formulate a plan to educate your staff and implement a new strategy to improve patient outcomes. Include the following elements, in any order:

Describe one of the IOM Core Competencies (CCs), and the impact it has on patient care outcomes.
