Create a 12- to 15-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation, with speaker notes, on the police and law enforcement. Include the following in your presentation:

• Present a timeline of the historical development of police agencies and their jurisdiction.
• Address the relationship between the historical development of police agencies and policing styles.

Specific Instructions

Here’s how to get started:

For this paper you will apply the theories of socialization, interest convergence, and behavior to analyze a particular case study.

Select an international organization or type of international organization to research. Identify a problem associated with this IO. (Is it ineffective? Unable to meet its goals? Struggling for support?). Develop a research question to explore based on these ideas.

(3) Consult the online library and visit any relevant organizational websites to make sure your research question needs to be answered (for example, you don’t want to turn in a question like “Why is the UN lacking in development programs?” only to find out that such programs do exist. This question is a bad example!).

The Research Question

After walking through the above steps, write up the following six parts in a document to be submitted:

(1) The research question.

(2) A paragraph containing your statement of purpose. What will the research achieve, and what insights will it provide about international organizations? If possible, explain how the project connects to one the COs to further explain the relevance of the topic.

(3) A one-sentence statement of your main argument or thesis. Keep in mind that this may change as you develop the topic, but it’s important to keep a main argument in mind on which the paper is concentrated.

(4) Two potential counterarguments to your main argument. Thinking through counterarguments helps you see areas of weakness in your own main argument. Don’t just write two short sentence stating the opposite of your main argument – develop these counterarguments into short paragraphs to explore them.

(5) A short paragraph about evidence. Explain what kinds of evidence will support your argument. Will you be citing specific events that illustrate the claim, mustering data, or working with theory? Will the study rely on quantitative data? If so, are you certain that this data exists? Think about the best way to show that your argument is valid and explain how you will target the evidence needed.

(6) Sources. List at least six sources other than the required readings on the subject you plan to write on.  At least 2 of the 6 sources must come from peer-reviewed journals.  The notes and bibliography of our readings are a good starting point but also you should consult the “Research in IR Theory” document in the Lessons tab on your vertical toolbar.  Use formal Chicago/Turabian style in listing your sources.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper on the history of the USA PATRIOT Act.

• Includethe following information in your paper:

  • Explain how the act affects an organization’s security plan.

Review its contents and functions. Search for information about the branches of government and the funding sources for your state government.

• How are the main components of government set up by your state’s constitution?

• Which branch of your state government seems the most powerful, on paper? What evidence do you use for your choice?

• Does the state constitution contain a Bill of Rights? If so, what appears to be the most important feature?

Thomas Friedman’s book, The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century, contends that “the convergence of technology and events that allowed India, China, and so many other countries to become part of the global supply chain for services and manufacturing, [created] an explosion of wealth in the middle classes of the world’s two biggest nations, giving them a huge new stake in the success of globalization…” He continued by writing that with “this ‘flattening’ of the globe (which) requires us to run faster in order to stay in place… (brings us face to face with the reality that) the world has gotten too small and too fast for human beings and their political systems to adjust in stable manner…”

The aim of this task is to define the common good in relation to this topic. The common good is what is best for all, as opposed to the particular goods that each stakeholder may pursue. Your response should analyse the various perspectives and critique these using relevant principles of human flourishing, in order to show how the common good might be achieved.

 

Choose one of the two Hot Topics and three of the perspectives represented by the major stakeholders in the issue.

 

Structure your essay according to the following framework (word count is given as a guide only):  Briefly describe the issue and explain how this is an issue which affects the common good. (200 words) (criterion 1) (INTRODUCTION)

 Describe and explain the perspectives of three stakeholders. Include a discussion of the main arguments they put forward and the resolution/s they would opt for. (700 words) (criterion 2)

 Choose three principles of human flourishing that are relevant to this issue. Use these principles to analyse each perspective you described above and discuss the ways in which the perspectives of these stakeholders support or hinder the common good. (800 words). (criterion 3)

 How might the common good be achieved in relation to this issue? Suggest a specific course of action and explain how this would best serve the common good. Include a proposal for what each stakeholder could do and what society as a whole could do to promote the achievement of the common good in relation to this issue.
