Literature review (395 pts): Spring 2016
Each student will independently write an APA-style literature review (including title page, abstract, and reference section as well as appropriate headings in the body of the paper). The body of this paper—not including the reference section—must be between 10 and 14 full pages in length. The paper should be based on six peer reviewed empirical research reports from the scholarly literature in psychology. Under no circumstance may you use Wikipedia, or anything like it, or articles from the popular media (New York Times etc) as cited sources in this paper. The sources must have been published after 1998 (unless you are doing an historical account of theory development)

Topic: The topic may be in any area of psychology except physiology (unless student has at least a minor in biology). Topic must address the relationship between at least two specific variables including identifying any important moderators. (the relationship can be causal but it is not required). No two students may do the same topic. Topics may be changed, with my approval, until Wednesday, March 30th

To help ensure that you give adequate time and attention to this task, you will be required to turn in:
1) A brief description of the topic of your paper including the start of a bibliography (20pts) 10 AM Thursday, Feb, 4th
2) An annotated APA Reference Section with 10 sources targeting your topic (75pts) 10AM, Thursday, March 17th
3) Fist submission of the entire final paper (100pts) 10AM, Tuesday April 12th
4) Revised final paper (200pts) 10AM, Thursday, May 5th

This paper must conform to APA writing guidelines. You have learned about these guidelines in at least two other psychology classes. If you are unsure about these guidelines you should consult your lab reports from methods, read the many online APA style tutorials (I highly recommend the Purdue OWL website), or come see me during office hours.

You must read the Baumiester & Leary (1997) article on writing literature reviews and follow their guidelines.

The introduction should present:
– An introduction to the topic and demonstrate its importance.
– A clear statement of purpose. The purpose should be one of those identified in Baumiester & Leary, 1997)
– An explanation of important concepts and variables to be addressed throughout the paper including the targeted variables and any important moderators.

The literature Review Section:
-Should adequately and consistently summarize cited sources (E.G., type of research, purpose, relevant variables, materials used, procedure overview, sample studied, relevant results & conclusions, limitations)
– Should contain a running narrative that provides an overarching conceptualization, perspective, theme or point of view demonstrating how the various sources fit together into the overarching theme or perspective.

The discussion section should:
-Evaluate the quality and strength of the evidence by analyzing and evaluating: (1) the consistency of findings, (2) methodological diversity in the research used, (3) generalizability of results, along with any other important issues. Keep in mind that the discussion section is much different than a restatement of information described in the lit review section

The conclusion section should:
-Draw appropriate conclusions about the relationship examined in the review based on the quality and strength of the presented evidence.

In general:
-It should effectively distinguish between empirical evidence, assertions from authors & your assertions.
-Writing should be clear, concise, accurate, well organized and free from grammatical errors.

NO DIRECT QUOTES ARE ALLOWED IN THIS PAPER.

Topic: case study

Order Description

Background:

In order to plan and provide optimal patient-centered nursing care, Registered Nurses need to be able to interpret clinical information and draw upon their knowledge of pathophysiology and evidence-based clinical practice. Therefore, the purpose of this assessment is to support the development of the skills needed to evaluate evidence and to develop reflection and clinical reasoning skills.

Case Report:

Based upon the Horizons Hospital & Health Service (HHHS) NURS 2024 Health of Older Adults client Mary Young, construct a case report. The case report will draw upon your knowledge of pathophysiology and relevant academic literature to support an evidence-based plan of care.

Headings and a description of the content for each section of the report have been provided. These serve as a guide for how you will present your case report; however, it is important that all sections of the report are conceptually connected. For example, your knowledge of pathophysiology and your understanding of this particular client should underpin the nursing problems that you identify which should, in turn, drive the nursing management that is relevant for this clinical situation.

The case report should include the following:

Introduction (150 words)

Introduce the client and provide a brief overview of their case. Provide an outline of the purpose and structure of the report.

You might like to think about the overview of the case study like a verbal clinical handover: what is the key information from the HHHS patient information, progress summary and medication chart that would be relevant for the plan of care for this client?

Primary admission diagnosis (200 words)
Identify the primary diagnosis for the client (i.e. the reason the client was admitted to the HHHS). Provide a brief description of the pathophysiology for the primary diagnosis.

As part of this discussion, it is important to relate the pathophysiology to client’s risk factors and relevant previous medical history.

Nursing problems (200 words)

Use your knowledge of pathophysiology and the subjective and objective data provided in the HHHS progress summary notes to identify five (5) nursing problems that may arise as a result of the client’s primary diagnosis. These problems may be actual or potential nursing problems. Provide a brief description for why these problems may arise for this client.

From these, select two (2) nursing problems as the focus for the remainder of the case report. Provide a rationale for your selection.

Nursing Management (600 words)

The nursing management should focus on the nursing assessment, nursing interventions and the role of the Registered Nurse (RN) related to medication management for this client and will address the two (2) selected nursing problems.

Nursing Problem 1: Nursing assessment, nursing intervention, medication management.

Discuss one (1) method of nursing assessment that would need to be performed related to the ongoing

nursing management of this nursing problem. Provide a rationale for this type of assessment and briefly

describe how this assessment would be conducted in this case.

Discuss one (1) nursing intervention that you would need to implement related to the ongoing nursing

management of this nursing problem. Provide a rationale for the intervention.

Discuss the role of the RN in the medication management related to the ongoing nursing management

of this nursing problem.

Nursing Problem 2: Nursing assessment, nursing intervention, medication management.
Discuss one (1) method of nursing assessment that would need to be performed related to this nursing problem. Provide a rationale for this type of assessment and briefly describe how this assessment would be conducted in this case.
Discuss one (1) nursing intervention that you would need to implement related to the ongoing nursing management of this nursing problem. Provide a rationale for the intervention.
Discuss the role of the RN in the medication management related to the ongoing nursing management of this nursing problem.

Discharge planning (250 words)

Identify five (5) issues/challenges that you may need to address for this client prior to discharge home. Discuss how you would facilitate discharge planning for this client, with consideration to two (2) of these concerns?

Conclusion (100 words)

Summarise the major findings of this case report.

Topic: Assignment 1: Financial Statement Analysis

Order Description

Select one (1) of the following publically traded health care organizations: Universal Health Services (NYSE: UHS) or Health Management Associates (NYSE: HMA).

Suppose you are a newly appointed CFO of your chosen health care organization. One of your first tasks is to conduct an internal financial analysis of the organization. Conduct a brief financial analysis and review of the chosen company’s financial statements for at least three (3) consecutive years. After conducting the analysis, interpret the data contained within the statements.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

1.Based on your review of the financial statements, suggest a key insight about the financial health of the company. Speculate on the likely reaction to the financial statements from various stakeholder groups (employee, investors, shareholders). Provide support for your rationale.
2.Identify the current industry trend that has the most significant impact on your chosen organization’s financial performance. Indicate the trend’s impact on the financial performance of the organization. As the CFO, suggest at least one (1) way that you might minimize the impact of the trend on the organization.
3.As the CFO, suggest one (1) key strategy that you might use in order to improve the financial performance of the organization. Recommend an approach to implement the suggested strategy. Provide support for your recommendation.
4.Use at least four (4) quality academic resources. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

•Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
•Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

Topic: National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA)

Order Description

Please read the attached paper before starting, so you have an understanding of what the project is about and how to add to it. Read through the whole thing before beginning to write the five below suggestions part. The suggestions our group came up with are below.

**Suggestions for NECA – Be sure to include a time frame with each of the suggestions – like how soon each route could be implemented.

**The academic process for implementing new classes is very long and complicated, so here are some possible routes to take(elaborate a little on academic process):

1. (Palomar + CSUSM = joint program)
2. (Work with veterans center to get veterans into program)
3. (There is an engineering program coming to CSUSM)
4. (Decide which route to take, and have another team next semester to take it from here)
5. ( After students finish MGMT certificate go interview with NECA, in hopes that this will motivate students who do not have a prior relationship with NECA to go through this program)

1- Palomar is a Junior College located in San Marcos California and CSUSM is Cal State University San Marcos, also located in San Marcos, CA. Here are there websites if you need to pull information from each… https://www2.palomar.edu/
https://www.csusm.edu/

2- CSUSM has a veterans center on campus, see the school website for more info and talk about how if a management certificate program was offered for students seeking to become an electrical engineer or prior employees going to CSUSM to get the education and training their lacking; how the veterans center would be on board and promote this program.

3- CSUSM will be adding an engineering degree program soon, talk about when this will be implemented and how NECA employees could benefit by being apart of it somehow.

4- Talk about the best option right now, and then suggest another senior experience group like ours taking this same project next semester and trying to implement one of our 5 suggestions.

5- Somehow we need to come with a way for students to know after they finish the classes suggested for this program that they will have an opportunity to interview with NECA.

Here is NECA’s website if you need it for anything.

Topic: Problem Statement Assignment

Order Description

TOPIC: Social media and Depression

Reference article: Will be uploaded as a PDF and you can use this article as your guide and reference for the paper (we only need one reference but you can use another article as well)

Overview: For this assignment you are asked to a) choose a problem area of interest to you (I chose social media and depression), b) find at least one (1) article and two (2) sources of national or state data that bear upon the problem, and c) using these materials as support, make a convincing argument that the problem needs to be addressed (presumably by some unspecified program initiative that you have designed and are seeking monetary support for). The final paper will be a carefully articulated exposition of the nature of the problem at the national or state level, as shown by your interpretation of two tables of data you construct as supporting information.

CREATE YOUR OWN TWO TABLES FROM THE ARTICLE. CHOOSE WHAT INFORMATION YOU NEED FROM THE TABLES GIVEN IN THE ARTICLE AND CREATE YOUR OWN.

Please be sure you have checked the paper for organization, sentence structure, grammatical errors, punctuation, and typographical errors; that your references are formatted according to APA style guidelines, and that you have followed instructions about constructing tables. The use of headings and subheadings in your paper is strongly encouraged (see below).

1. Introduction (1-2 paragraphs) a. Introduce the problem
b. State why it may be a problem
2. Evidence about the Problem (2-3 pages)
a. Data source #1 and Table 1 with discussion of content b. Data source #2 and Table 2 with discussion of content
3. Contours of the Problem (1-2 pages)
a. For whom is it a problem (ages, population subgroups, etc.) b. How many people are affected directly? indirectly?
c. When and where is it an issue?
4. Summary of Findings
a. What are predictable outcomes if the problem is left unaddressed?
1. for affected individuals
2. for communities
3. for nation as a whole
b. Social, ethical, and fiscal costs of unaddressed problem
5. References

Questions to ask yourself before submitting your paper:
1. Have you clearly articulated both the social and demographic (population) significance of the topic?

2. Have you clearly articulated the “need” that makes the problem a problem?

3. Has the data been presented and discussed in a way that makes the problem statement flow in a logical progression?

4. Does the data documentation match the problem? Does it elaborate the contours of the problem?

5. Have you clearly articulated a case for the seriousness of the problem?

6. Are the tables clearly labeled and properly constructed so that someone unfamiliar with the problem can look at the data with understanding?

7. Has the paper been carefully proofread and checked for grammatical/spelling errors? Did you conform to APA style in citing references, including data sources?

Topic: Genre Film Essay

Order Description

For this paper, I?m asking you to study the evolution of a film genre. We have
considered the evolution of the Western and the development of Art Cinema as a
reaction to classical Hollywood film. Next week, we will be looking at film
noir and issues of gender, and the following week, horror film and issues of
race.

You are free to choose any two films you would like to write about either in
one genre or as a crossing of genre and film style (as in art cinema or film
noir). Here are your options.

1. Choose a genre that you would like to study more closely. It can be
anything: suspense, screwball comedy, action film, war film, film noir,
thriller, suspense thriller, romantic comedy, horror, disaster movie,
psychological thriller, essay film, etc.

If you?re not sure of a genre, you can pretty quickly find other films in the
genre with a google search. You can also ask me, or look it up on imdb.com (a
very handy film database).

2. Choose one example of this film that goes back at least thirty years (i.e.,
before 1986) and one film in this genre made in the past decade. Compare and
contrast.

Watch both films and describe the continuities and the changes that you
observe. Be specific. How do the stock characters and the stock narratives
remain constant yet change? What are the genre?s rules and how are they
utilized in the first film? Be careful not to assume that the first example is
a pristine or pure example, since it?s likely to be an evolution from an
earlier instance dating to the classical period of Hollywood film (even if it
is a foreign or international film).

3. Find one academic article about that genre (perhaps in the FTC reader, but
not one of the one?s we have read) that discuss the genre in some manner, and
explore in what ways the ideas apply or fail to apply to the works. Take some
time to look at article abstracts to find one that appeals to you and that you
find interesting. Sometimes, you need to read the first page of an article to
see if it?s of interest. Use this article to deepen your analysis of these
films and the genre you are exploring. You don?t have to agree, but work the
article?s claims into your discussion. If you disagree, show how your examples
demonstrate your position.

Articles should be found on JSTOR.org, which is accessible through the Pratt
library portal. Newspaper articles or reviews will not be accepted.

Some questions that you can consider (though you don?t need to answer all of
these):

?What is exciting in the evolution from the first film to the second? Why might
this change have taken place?
?What remains central to the concern of the genre? Does the genre uphold an
ideology or value that remains constant in spite of the changes?

?Does the second film challenge, question or overturn the genre?s basic idea or
value? If so, how does the filmmaker use film form to develop a critical
position vis à vis the first film or the genre as a whole (think, here, of how
Godard turns the gangster movie into a film about women in French society and
gender)?
