This is a short, argumentative paper that will require a close reading of the text, i.e., you must engage with Beyond Good & Evil or The Ethics of Ambiguity. Some of the paper should be exegetical, that is, should explain and summarize the text. Do this while arguing your position.

Note: This is a thesis defense paper. In each of these prompts you are being asked to choose a position and argue for it. Clearly state your position in the introduction. You will not be graded on your thesis but on how well you argue for it and whether or not it exists.

1. What does Nietzsche take to be the prejudice of philosophers? Explain how he works through his criticism with reference to at least two other figures, e.g., Kant, the Stoics, etc. According to Nietzsche, moralizing has blocked philosophers for a more profound, honest, courageous understanding of reality. Explain why this is. State whether or not you find him successful in his endeavor. Argue for your position.

2. What sort of character is Nietzsche’s “Free Spirit”? In what sense is this person exceptional? How ought the Free Spirit live his/her life? Does this apply to all people? Why or why not? Do you think Nietzsche is right to claim that such people exist? Why or why not. Explain your reactions reading Nietzsche. If you found him compelling, explain why, and if you found him disturbing, do likewise.

3. What is noble? Explain this with constant reference to Nietzsche’s distinction between master and slave morality. What defines these moral systems? What might Nietzsche, as a self-proclaimed Philosopher of the Future, have to say about both of these worldviews? Do you find either master or slave morality more compelling? Or neither? Explain why.

4. What is an “ethics of ambiguity”? de Beauvoir critiques existentialism for not yet providing an ethical frame for its thought. It is her goal to do just that in Ethics of Ambiguity. Explain how she defines her project in the first section of the text. Why is it that man is essentially ambiguous? What does this mean? Afterwards, establish how this particular ambiguity gives rise to an ethics. Do you think de Beauvoir is successful in her analysis and approach. Why or why not? Defend your position. 5. de Beauvoir (pg. 32) suggests that there are certain instances in which suicide may be morally permissible. Given her existentialist position, explain why/how she is capable of defending such a position. Then, describe how this makes her different from any 2 of the following 3: The Stoics, Kant, and Aristotle. Which of these philosophers do you most agree with and why? Please defend your position with reference to that philosopher’s wider ethical systems.

6. In Part II of Ethics of Ambiguity, de Beauvoir reveals a number of different ways in which people attempt to escape from their freedom. Explain 2-3 different ways in which people do just this. Provide a personal account reflecting one of these flights from freedom and express how one might try to overcome this flight. How can one come to genuine freedom? Is de Beauvoir correct in her assessment of the situation? Has she missed anything?

7. Create your own prompt in which you pair Nietzsche with de Beauvoir. In what sense are they both existentialists? What does it mean to be an existentialist? Take whatever orientation on this question you wish.

What is curating? What is a curator?
When we “like” a video on Youtube or an image on Instagram or Pinterest, in essence, we are curating. Curating is simply selecting and separating a set of images, objects, or ideas for the purpose of experiencing and contemplating them as a whole. The job of a curator at a museum is to put together an exhibition of artworks. Their selection is never random. The works usually have in common a medium, genre, subject matter, theme, or concept.
What is a curatorial statement?
A curatorial statement is an essay written by the curator meant to explain the rationale behind the exhibition. It is usually a persuasive essay that informs the reader about the premise of the exhibit and describes in detail some of the works in order to show how these works relate together and why it is significant to see them together.

Research Step 1: Access Google’s Art Project
The source for your research will be Google’s Art Project located online at https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/project/art-project
Here you have access to several art museum collections from around the world. If you are not familiar with the site, begin by exploring. You can navigate either by looking at collections, artists, or artworks. Under “Artworks”, you can explore specific media, events, places, and dates. Click on an artwork to gain access to more detailed descriptions (see “details” tab in upper left corner).
Research Step 2: The Process
After you feel comfortable navigating the site, begin research for your exhibit. Here are the parameters for the exhibit:

• It must be an exhibition of 10 different works of art

• The works must come from at least three different civilizations and/or time periods

• The works can use the same or different art media.

• The works all must share some theme or concept.

Process of your Research:
Rather than choosing a concept and then finding works that rigidly fit that concept, let your exploration guide you towards a concept. Here are some terms that you can use to begin your research: survival, mortality, mind, gender, power, physics, learning, agony, and happiness.
In the “Artworks” page of Google’s Art Project, enter any of these terms in the “Refine your search” field. As you explore the art that is generated begin looking for art that share formal and conceptual elements. Remember to read the details sections for the images to gain better insight. As you search, you can continue to refine your search by adding other terms. For example, “power” may lead you to the idea of “subjugation” or “energy”. In the “Refine your search” field you can add search terms by typing a comma between the words. Edit your gallery to a final 10 artworks that will be your curated exhibit.
Here are some guidelines for the paper:
The essay should be at least 500 words, double-spaced.
The initial paragraph should establish the overall premise of the exhibit, the main theme or concept the show.
The middle paragraphs should describe detailed aspects about 4 of the 10 artworks. Describe what they have in common and how they each illustrate the overall theme of the show.
In the final paragraph, suggest the wider significance of your theme. Describe what you learned from putting the show together and/or what you hope the viewer takes away from the exhibit.
As with any persuasive essay, think about your audience and any counter-arguments or opinions to your ideas and address one of them in some way.

No matter how hard an agency tries, there will always be allegations of misconduct and actual misconduct by law enforcement officers.
