Chapter 12 discusses numerous psychological disorders, but certainly not all of them. Mental illness is often difficult to diagnosis which can lead to fear and misunderstanding. Because of this individuals with mental illness may be portrayed in movies, TV shows, novels etc. as more crazy than normal even though there may not be such a clear distinction in their behaviors. Most of us are familiar with a character that demonstrates this exaggeration.

1. Identify a movie, show, book etc that you are familiar with in which this is the case. 2. Specify the disorder that is portrayed. and 3. Based on what your have learned in this chapter what do you think about this portrayal?

THIS IS A CLASSMATE RESPOND: This year, the movie Split came out in theaters. In this film, there is a man with twenty-three different identities, he suffers from multiple personality disorder or dissociative identity disorder. In this disorder, several distinct personalities emerge at different times. Throughout the movie, he would go from a woman named Patricia, to a young boy named Hedwig, to another guy named Kevin, and a few other people. This disorder is known for the personalities having their own names, identities, voices, and even IQs. This was extremely well shown in the movie. The different personalities had different ages, memories, and voices. Hedwig, a young boy, spoke like a child and even acted and drew pictures like a young boy would. Kevin seemed like a normal guy in his late twenties/early thirties. Patricia had an accent and seemed extremely smart. The film did a great job portraying this disorder and the intense consequences that can arise from suffering from it. Im not going to spoil the movie, so to find out what happens youll need to watch it. I would definitely recommend it.
