Imagine you are a senior business executive with a multinational corporation that sells garments that are manufactured in Bangladeshi factories. First, CHOOSE ONE COMPANY that you represent. Here are some to choose from: Children’s Place, Walt Disney Company, Walmart, Joe Fresh (Loblaw), Tommy Hilfiger (PVH), Calvin Klein (PVH), H&M, Benetton, J.C. Penney, Nike, Cato Fashions, Target, American Eagle. Find out if your company has a corporate or social responsibility page (all the above do). Check to see if it has an official policy on factory safety or working conditions. Look at any statements it issued after the 2013 building collapse in Bangladesh which killed over a thousand workers who were engaged in making apparel for multinational corporations (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Savar_building_collapse). Look through the web to find out what the history of apparel manufacturing and trade has been, and where Bangladesh fits into that.

Answer the following questions based on your research:

PART B

Compose a formal corporate document outlining what your company should do in the wake of the recent building collapse in Bangladesh. The document should be written to address the stakeholders of the company. Make sure it identifies the problems and includes feasible recommendations based on data. Cite your sources. Ethical Decisions in the Workplace
After reading your background readings, please review the following scenario and address the questions at the end.
Jerry Stevens heads up an excavation crew for the municipal utilities district in a city in Nebraska. A sewer line needs to be replaced and it has been excavated with a back-hoe. The trench is 7 feet deep. The municipality\’s safety rules indicate that employees should not go into the trench without a trench box. This rule is to prevent employees from being buried if the trench walls collapse. People die every year from trench cave-ins.
The trench box won\’t arrive on site for another 6 hours and the city promised residents that the sewer would be fixed by the end of the day, which now seems impossible. The City Administrator called Jerry on his cell phone and indicated that it was imperative that the sewer be fixed as soon as conceivably possible because a City Council member is served by that sewer line and will raise a fuss if it’s not fixed by the promised time.
One of the more experienced workers states, \”It\’s only going to take 30 minutes to dig under the pipe and loosen the fittings. We don\’t need the trench box. We used to do this all the time before we were required to use one of those darn things.\”
Jerry knows he\’s right. He used to do it himself before the rule was put in place. Also, the soil is clearly a cohesive soil and it\’s highly unlikely that it will collapse. And although there is an organizational policy to use a trench box for trenches deeper than 5 feet, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) does not have
Jurisdiction over municipalities in Nebraska because municipalities are political subdivisions of the State. The only entity regulating safety policies is the City\’s Safety Director and he took the day off.

And you also have a third option, to invest in a 10 year municipal bond with a very high return. Here are the investment options with the augmented data.
Option A: Real estate development. This is a risky opportunity with the possibility of a high payoff, but also with no payoff at all. You have reviewed all of the possible data for the outcomes in the next 10 years and these are your estimates of the Net Present Value of the cash flow and probabilities.

High NPV: $5 million, Pr = 0.5
Medium NPV: $2 million, Pr = 0.3

Option B: Retail franchise for Just Hats, a boutique type store selling fashion hats for men and women. This also is a risky opportunity but less so than option A. It has the potential for less risk of failure, but also a lower payoff. You have reviewed all of the possible data for the outcomes in the next 10 years and these are your estimates of the Net Present Value of the cash flow and probabilities.
