discuss what the work of art represents.

Arts Experience
For this assignment, you will visit an art exhibit. One option (if you live in close proximity to Belton, Texas) is the Baugh Visual Arts Center at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Otherwise, find an exhibit closer to you.

You should evaluate three (3) works of art included in the exhibit, and write an Arts Experience Essay.

Organization
Your opening paragraph should include the name and location of the gallery, the title and date of the exhibit, the artists full name and the title of each work you chose to evaluate. Your paper should evaluate the formal qualities, subject matter, and medium of at least three works of art included in the exhibit. Use the following guidelines to organize and develop your Arts Experience.

1. When evaluating the formal qualities of each work, you should discuss what you like and dislike about each work. In your evaluation, consider: line, shape, color, texture, space, mass/volume, depth and composition

2. When evaluating the subject matter of each work discuss what the work of art represents. Remember, not all works of art have subject matter; many buildings, paintings, sculptures and other art objects include no recognizable imagery but feature only lines, colors, masses, volumes and other formal elements. However, all works or art have meaning, because they seek to convey feelings, communicate ideas or affirm the beliefs of their makers.

3. The medium is simply the material or materials from which a work art is made. Two-dimensional mediums include painting, drawing, prints and photography. Three-dimensional mediums are sculpture and architecture. Technique is the process used to make the work. Today, literally anything can be used to make a work of art, including not only traditional materials like paint, ink and stone, but also food, trash, earth, found objects, prefabricated objects and consumer products.

4. Dont forget to interject YOUR opinion. I want to know what you think of the works and artists you are reviewing. Dont be afraid to say you dont like an artists work.

Guidelines
Write a thoughtful essay, 2-3 pages in length, double spaced using 12 point font and 1 margins on all sides. Your paper should be clearly organized, largely free of grammatical and syntactical errors and supported by numerous specific examples from the exhibit you attended.

Describe claim of value

We use a claim of value to make a judgment, express approval or disapproval, and to attempt to prove that some action, belief, or condition is right or wrong, good or bad, and so forth. For your essay, focus on a claim of value regarding a topic you feel deeply about and develop it into an essay of two to three pages. Be sure to do the following:

Clearly state your claim and fully support it through specific examples. Avoid making a policy claim stating what should be done about a problema value claim states that some-thing is good or bad, right or wrong, valuable or worthless, moral or immoral, etc. Your claim of value IS your thesis for the essay so it should be at the end of your introduction. The body is the discussion and support for your claim (and your evaluation of the issue). For example, if you were to argue that legalized marijuana is a bad option as your value claim (do you see the evaluation here?), then your need to support that judgment in the body of your papergive reasons why it is bad (without saying I think, feel, believe . . . or in my opinion.
Include a discussion of opposing points of view and why you think they are wrong (refutation). Remember to share the primary opposing point for which you have a responsedont weaken your claim by providing a stronger opposing point than those youve offered in support of your claim.

Be thoughtful in selecting your topic. While some topics are clearly argumentative and may be about issues that are important to you as an individual, you will find trying to argue about either (a) issues with a long history of debate or (b) issues which have already been decided, can lead to using cliched thinking and argument. Some examples that can be problematic are abortion, euthanasia, or marriage equalityso please do not use these topics. It is not that these are not important issues that people still disagree about, it is just that they have been so widely discussed that it is difficult to add anything new to the argument. Check with me if youre not sure about your topic.
