Non – Pharmacological Strategies
Narrow, narrow, narrow. I refer to the above choices for your essay as prompts rather than topics because I expect you to select one and narrow in on a particular idea. A very broad level comparison is often simplistic and lacks coherence.
I highly recommend the Point-by-Point pattern of comparison. A Block/Subject-by-Subject pattern is unlikely to allow you space to clearly and sufficiently develop your comparison and reach the assignment length requirement.
Ensure your topic sentences make clear comparative points.
Ensure your comparison is equally balanced.
Make sure you carefully check your MLA formatting. As per course policies, incorrect formatting will result in an up to 10% penalty. Ask me in advance if youre still unsure about any formatting issues.
Look at some of the professional and student examples posted on the course Moodle site.
Structure your thesis statement carefully. An effective comparative thesis does not simply note the subjects of comparison, but also makes a clear point about the comparison (i.e. what the comparison illustrates).
Keep in mind, sometimes its logical for the thesis statement to follow the preview sentence in a comparison and contrast essay. As long as both components are within your outline, you can make the decision as to which order is most logical for your essay. (Of course, feel free to ask my advice.)

Write a 1000-word critical interpretation paper about some aspect of the story A Perfect Day For Bananafish, by J. D. Salinger. Please note that a critical interpretation is not a plot synopsis; it is an analysis that examines various literary elements in the writing to demonstrate the authors purpose. In other words, dont tell what happened in the story, but rather, tell what the events, characters, elements of irony or symbolism in the story mean.
Some of the possible topics you might consider include the following:
Why did Seymour commit suicide?
What is the significance of the Bananafish story Seymour tells Sibyl?
Why does Seymour become angry at the woman in the elevator?
Is Seymour a pedophile? Was this Salingers intention in portraying the characters the way he did?
How does Salinger use symbols and allusions to enhance the story?
Most of the story consists of dialogue. What techniques does Salinger use to make his characters conversations sound realistic?
Write your paper as though your audience has read the story and that you, as critic, will help them better understand how to interpret it. Do not use secondary sources (research) in writing this paper. The thesis will be your own argument supported by the text of the story. Quotes from the story will be necessary to support your argument. Your Works Cited page will only include a citation for the story you are analyzing.
