Should Confederate symbols such as flags, statues, and names for institutions be removed?

Introduction:
In June 2015, the murder of nine men and women at an historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, touched off a renewed debate on the display of Confederate symbols, such as the Confederate flag, and the commemoration of Confederate military and public officials in monuments, cemeteries, and the names of institutions such as schools and colleges.
The controversy erupted because the perpetrator was an avowed racist whose social media displayed images of the Confederate flag alongside images praising the Nazis, KKK, and apartheid groups in southern Africa.
While some critics have called for the removal of Confederate symbols and commemorations as perpetuating racism and even inciting violence, others have insisted that the heritage of the Civil War era south ought to be preserved in memory of those who lost their lives in the fighting.
Question:
Should Confederate symbols such as flags, statues, and names for institutions be removed?
Advice and Requirements:
Its a broad question that you can take in any number of directions. Im not looking for one answer more than another.
You should also do some background research on the specifics of the debate over Confederate symbols as it has unfolded since the summer. It will be easier to discuss the issue with some specifics.
Recently, the Alabama state newspaper site AL.com collected a number of articles

some news items, others opinion pieces.
You can find more recent articles (again both news items and opinions) by searching google news for things such as confederate controversy, confederate flag controversy, confederate monuments, confederate statue, and other such terms.
There were a number of articles in spring 2017 about New Orleans removing Confederate monuments. Again, a search of New Orleans Confederate monuments brings a lot of results.
Here are a few recent items from Florida:

You may want to consider differences between different kinds of symbols–say the flag versus a cemetery. Or, you may want to draw distinctions between different kinds of institutions displaying Confederate items–for example, a public building versus a private one.
Technical Requirements
Target length: 3 pages. Yes, a little over is fine.
Format: Double spaced, font such as Times New Roman 12
Citation style: Your choice. Putting the title of an article in parenthesis after the sentence is fine.
Remember
Do not hold back your ideas for the end.
Use your best material first.
Then use the body of the paper to explain, elaborate, and demonstrate your ideas.
Make sure you answer the question directly in the introduction.
Papers must be submitted online through Webcourses using a doc, docx, txt, or rich format. Pages, the Mac word processor, doesnt open for me, so please avoid.
Parting Thoughts
For citations from news articles, put a brief title of the article in parenthesis after the sentence. Then include a works cited page at the end. If citing something found online, include the URL. No page number is necessary, since there wont be one.

Avoid quoting from the book/news articles except in the following circumstance:

Youre quoting a historical person.
You want to comment directly on the way the authors have characterized something, as I did above.

Do not quote if:
You like the authors turn of phrase and cant think of a better way to say something. Force yourself to use your own words. Thats the only way youll get stronger.
The quote takes up a lot of space. No block quotes! You know, the ones that are indented and take up multiple lines. I dont read those–in books, articles, or student papers.
