MAKING THE CONNECTION:
I. Introduction
What changes your mind? What topics and issues would you never change ideas and what topics and issues are you open to new information and other points of view? This week we discuss settling on your topic and claim for this persuasive assignment.
II. Body
A. Persuasive speaking is intended to influence others in an ethical way.
1. We can influence others by reinforcing or changing how they think (attitudes).
2. We can influence others by reinforcing or changing how they behave (habits).
3. We can influence others by reinforcing or changing how they act (decisions).
4. Persuasion is about influence through reasonable discussion, it is not about trickery, force or deception. Persuasion should acknowledge that reasonable people have differing points of view.
B. Persuasive speeches begin with claims the territory the speaker stakes out or claims. This is the main thesis you argue in a persuasive speech. These claims can be one of three types:
1. Claims of fact address what is true or not true. Is smoking bad for your health?
2. Claims of value ask what is good/right. Is it wrong to sell a dangerous product?
3. Claims of policy address what should be done. Should cigarettes be banned?
C. Persuasive speeches may be organized in several ways and we will focus on problem/solution and Monroes motivated sequence.
1. Problem/solution speeches address the way people think or hold attitudes about claims. Cell phone use while driving causes accidents and should be banned. This claim divides into two main points, problem and solution.
I. Problem Cell phone use while driving causes accidents.
A. Describe the problem – examples of cell use and accidence
B. Describe the magnitude of the problem statistics about kinds, frequency and severity of accidents.
II. Solution Cell phone use while driving should be banned.
A. Describe the solution pass a law banning use and establishing penalties
B. Describe how and why the solution works examples from other states, enforcement
2. Monroes motivated sequence should be used with an audience that is already sympathetic to your goal and ready to act on it. This pattern follows a persons attitude process and involves a five point outline.
I. Attention A life could be saved every eight minutes.
II. Need Thousands of people are waiting for organ donation.
