Please answer the following questions after reading the attached the reading.
1. I mentioned in the lecture that Young Goodman Brown is an allegory. You may remember my definition of an allegory in my lectures about The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: a complex narrative where all of the characters and incidents are symbolic. In this story, some of the significances are easy to figure out: Goodman Brown is a good man; his wife, Faith, represents his Faith in God; and the man with the snake staff is, of course, Satan himself. After having read the story, what do you think is the total meaning of Hawthornes allegory? What is he trying to say?
2. I think Goodman Browns motivation for attending the witches sabbath are rather vague. Why do you think Brown wants to experience evil for a night? Do you believe that all good men have this same temptation?
3. The story ends on a rather gloomy note. Do you think Hawthorne had such a dark view of human nature, or is he trying to warn us away from Browns mistake?
